Hahaha... just post lor since hangers are also part of advertising the event...
Anyway, SMB388S, SMB1462D & TIB822C are already at the roadshow today... Heard that there will be another 2 more buses coming...
Do not anticipate the Enviro500 as there are low shelters around the building unless they find a safe space. If not, it's really risky...

The 3 buses today:
Also, TIB717Z (DAF) appeared outside the exhibit but only stop for a while and then go off without going on display:
Nobody picked up on 2 big news?
1. Part-time drivers for hire.
2. Dedicated training centre.
Or people only interested in the metal frames of the bus and go ga-ga over the door-hinges?

Nowadays, I seeing more female BCs driving buses... Looks like more women are actually going into the workforce now, so I won't be surprised if more of them sign up for this to earn money. Before these newer female BCs came in, there were very few female BCs (all the older aunties, few younger BCs)... Well, that would mean that the male BCs will not dominate the workforce.
*No gender discrimination intended*
I personally think this move suggests that SMRT has no idea where the bus industry is heading towards......either that or they dont care. Or they think that the bus pax flow is too peakish to handle with current pool of full-time drivers.
Personally, I can't imagine a part-timer bothering to learn everything about how to use the complicated new systems like the IBMS, the fare systems etc etc. Industry insiders might wish to correct me at this point however if they disagree.

You are correct to point that out, but in order for females to enter the workforce, there must be good support from the family, childcare/student care, government...
Presently now, government is only offering words of encouragement and not action...
If government dont lead, corporations will not follow

They are 'all talk, no show'... I think LTA should reinforce this issue on SMRT and SBS Transit to make this concept work. The government needs to help out too, because they do own both bus companies... If they don't, what for are they trying to operate buses under the contracting model from 2016?

Bro, to clarify, government owns both SBST/SMRT now, after 2016, it is still government owned...

But I would see this as a more solid attempt to hire more drivers locally. Even the usual import sources are starting to dry up, so operators need new and very different ways to get drivers.
I think it wouldn't be any more complex than what a taxi driver is currently doing, but I do agree that it will be hard for some to pick up the knowledge. It may sound like a surprise to you but in different parts of the world where I have experienced, it is very common to hear drivers making a wrong turn or struggling to set the fare device because it is their first week or even day at work.

Agreed to first para!
But I think it does suggest our fundamental mindset towards driving a bus (low value skilled job). Or in fact, towards many jobs in SG, where we value plenty of arguably unproductive (as comparison to) activities such as property speculation, sales, finance, etc etc.

I mean that the government will control the services under SBS Transit and SMRT control now from 2016 onwards...

It is an admirable effort by SMRT, yes.
But I would disagree that "it wouldn't be any more complex than what a taxi driver is currently doing". There are lots more systems for a BC to pick up, there is the scheduling aspect to follow, and the customer service aspect of the BC's job is more complicated than that of a taxi driver - many more possible situation when your vehicle carries 80 - 90 passengers instead of 4.
