Took 190 at around 8:40pm this evening, from the bus stop outside New Bridge Rd terminal. While walking towards the bus stop, I missed a bendy bus. Waited approx 3 mins and the next bus arrive. Board the bus and it was relatively empty with lots of empty seats. As the bus reach the bus stop opp Far East, saw the bus ahead almost full with lots of standing pax. When it reach Teck Whye, another almost empty 190 was behind. I wonder if it is SMRT schedule or the driver chiong.
190 case unpredictable le bro,But with 3 mins per bus during that timing its more than acceptable for today's standard..I think that SMRT side trying hard also. These few days they deploy mostly 12m buses for 190A and deploy almost all bendy for the parent route. They can try giving 5 duties to Amdep also
882,920,922 only need extra buses during peaks only not more. For normal shift these svc require not more than 3 buses that's all.Population wise i feel BPJ,CCK has risen over the years

882 could have some more x-over from 859/167
do 1-2 trips on 882 and back to 859
frequency could be also enhanced during AM peak towards Sembawang MRT and PM peak towards Sembawang Park
920/922 needs 1-3 buses more
882 weekdays 2 buses are fine..only need an extra 1 bus from 167 during peaks and 1TQ bus during weekends/holidays
920:3 full day 3 splits & 922:2 full days 3 splits enough
945 need 2 crossover bendies during PM peak
How bout 190E skipping last stop from bpj towards city during Am and NBR towards BPJ skipping last 2 stops before going BKE?AM/PM 5 trips

Yes 882/920/922 all can be managed with crossovers during peak hours.

Yes, BPJ / CCK area have really grown in terms of population but compared to other areas in Singapore, infrastructure wise have not progressed much, except for the much awaited DTL.

I think with a peak frequency of 3-4 mins, bunching is unavoidable by the time the bus gets to Scotts Road. Anyway, by then the buses are so housefull that people who leave 2 buses, might at least get a place in 3rd bus.
Service 972 does not duplicate much of the route of service 190.
From town till BPJ its an alternative beside 700.
SMRT really needs to get their sh*t together and buy a lot more buses than they have now and make maintainence much better to even stand a chance against SBST. Bus shortage seems to be the problem and not "too little trips". Unless they have a lot of buses, frequency can't improve as we cannot forsee bus breakdowns due to their lack of maintainence for buses as if you take out the spares, then the other service has a bus breakdown, what happens?
Bottom line, BSEP for SMRT is a good idea, just excecuted poorly. We don't need MANs. We need DDs. We need Bendies. We need manpower (for all the extra buses coming in). We need more assurance that SMRT can be a worthy competitor to SBST in terms of buses (SBST fails in terms of trains).

I think this has been made loud and clear for the last 2 years... yet no official announcement on high capacity buses.
Actually, since SBS Transit may have an excess number of Double Decker buses, is it possible for SMRT to pay SBS Transit some money (rental) and use SBST DD buses on their services?
(off-topic) Meanwhile, regarding the comment about train competition, I feel that SBS Transit actually does it better than SMRT.
By the way, in terms of number of rail lines, including LRT, SBS Transit now runs the same number of rail lines as SMRT.

I agree. It has way too many excess DD buses for now and still registering. LTA should try to get SMRT to operate a few by paying SBST a fee either by SMRT or LTA to operate on services that need high capacity buses until SMRT makes up its mind. This is also a part of BSEP.
Dun forget there's more new towns coming up..Joo Koon Interchange expected to ready by year end..Besides bsep there's also new routes by them also.Might as well SMRT wait for their new depot to be ready

A simpler option is to merge the two operators. Optionally it could be a nationalisation or a bus only merger.
Double decker buses on SMRT territory (and vice-versa) could be achieved in one month (if urgent, two weeks) or less.
OFF-TOPIC
The delivery of SBST Citaros NON-BSEP seemed to have halted. I thought until 69xx? Why only up to 67xx?

I strongly disagree in merger.
In fact I think there should be competition not only in within the Public Buses industry, but also between buses and trains. The country which just had a dedicated thread works this way, and I guarantee u the buses there have far less issues than SG in overall, besides fares, maintenance and balance in bus frequencies.
I mean, won't merger cause more problems? It's either a worse PT or more tax collecting.

Besides the reasons stated by user SMB128B, what will happen if there is another illegal strike? Who will plug gaps if neccessary?

The problem is that there is currently no real competition in Singapore, resulting in complacency as a whole!
Any attempts in doing so is way too slow. We have been discussing for years about introducing a third operator. What has happened to that since?
Moves need to be decisive. Just as how the Hong Kong government showed China Motor Bus they meant business when their performance is unsatisfactory.
A merger, if any, should be done with the view to consolidate current resources. What urgently needs to be done now is for resources to be allocated to maximise efficiency. People should not be stranded at the bus stop and left to suffer for years because of "business decisions" and "operational reasons"! Of course if there is no action to reallocate resources more efficiently after merger, such a move would be useless.
After resources are reallocated properly, LTA can move on to the next phase of introducing real competition through tendering of routes.

There is an organisation of last resort. CEOs of both bus operators were once in that organisation.
In practice private bus operators would fill this role in other developed cities; this can be seen in planned or unplanned rail replacements.

I thought March 2015 is when the new Joo Koon Bus Interchange will open?
The one opening at this year end should be the new Bedok Bus Interchange, since the new Boon Lay Bus Interchange opened 1 year after Jurong Point Extension opened and Bedok Mall opened last year.

Through competition, more resources will be thrown in to challenge the other bus ops and MRT... Only through intense competition will things get better... Applies to everything what, and also better allocation of resources...
Why no third operator, gvmt know it themselves... You dun wan then dun wan, and let all this shit continue lor...
So when will they really show its time to start the ccompetition? Nobody really knows... LTA just like multi-functional PTOs I guess...
Are sv972 drivers still driving the buses like sight seeing buses nowadays? I take once and give up becos of the slow speed. Sv190 screwed up again after the new year. Jesus Christ.
