The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will build a new bus depot in Jurong West, as part of a move to provide bus operators with additional aid. The new depot is for SMRT, and will cater to the additional buses that the operator is bringing in over the next few years.
In a release on Tuesday, the LTA noted that SMRT's existing bus depots and bus parks are reaching full capacity, and the new facility as additional buses are added under the S$1.1 billion Bus Service Enhancement Programme.
The LTA will call a tender on Tuesday seeking contractors to build the new bus depot off Jurong West Ave 2, which will accommodate about 500 buses and be ready in 2015.
This comes after the Government announced in 2012 that it would fund the development and land cost of bus depots and bus parking infrastructure, and lease these to bus operators at a nominal fee. So far, the LTA has developed and handed over one bus park at Upper Changi Road East to SBS Transit and another at Woodlands to SMRT in January this year.
the actual layout by lta
quite a good choice of loc, turn out straight hit kje to cck, and much more closer to bbt than kjdep
which brings me to the first comment u see in the pic... srsly joke rite?

am sure forum users here also will have the same sentiments
Is this new depot replacing Kranji Depot?
Should be replacing Kranji.Nice can off Svc use Jurong Rd.Towards BBT roughly is 6.8km,CCK 8.1km BPJ should be full Wldep.Should be able to part control 178 and 187 too from BNL.To Bukit Merah and Harbourfront is roughly 17.9 and 19km.Can major control 851,855,167,963 too

Let's see if LTA provides slots for bendy buses or forces SMRT to go DDs with this depot

OS dist for BBT and CCK bus to and fro Wenya depot is much less than KJ?
Can someone enlighten me on whether it falls under LTA's responsbility to provide a bus depot for operators? The 2 completed bus parks are understandable since they are by their name, just bus parks to accommodate more buses due to the BSEP addition. Constructing a full-fledged depot using public funds seem to be going a little overboard imo. I seriously hope I am mistaken.

Not really. SBS Transit's Bukit Batok depot is in SMRT's area.
I will also provide the images of the progress of depot since I bypass the area almost everyday.

Yes,For BBT can use PIE or Jurong Rd and to CCK can use Jurong Rd/BBT Rd only BPJ Kranji much nearer in km.
Location looks near to the upcoming Tengah New Town..
Yeah one of the reason too.
So in short WYDEP?Looks like a 3 storey depot

Does that surprise you much given how our 2 PTOs have under-performed in service standards, especially SMRT? The QoS and the fines are really lenient in reality when you consider that our buses are still a major fail-point in the hub-spoke system (comparatively slow and not too reliable)
The govt's rhetoric is and will still be "free market".
But you can expect them to also meddle more and more in the workings of the PTOs. They can't be expected to "back-pedal" after talking so much about privatisation. But you can see that LTA is taking increasing steps to reign in many aspects of bus service provision. The most visible examples have been the central bus planning, competitive tendering of bus routes. And now, assets will be leased as well.
If you guys are curious enough, it seems that the govt is studying the "London bus model" and the "Scandinavian bus model" very intensively. Go read that up....these models hold the keys to potential improvements for our buses.
In the long term, building depot for SMRT/SBST will be better.
For the simple reason that when the lease terms come up and SMRT under-performs again, no more fine. They will just get the boot.
Also, the new Citydirect route from Jurong is unique. Fare revenue is collected by govt and the operator gets a fixed fare.
How is this "free market"?
Nope. If you guys bother to read the trends carefully it is clear: Govt is stepping away from privatising bus services.
I don't think the depot is elegant [ 文雅 ] enough...

I would have no qualms over the provision of depots if the G really moves toward the London model and if required, show the incumbents (esp. SMRT) the door when they fail to perform. The problem is, is the G willing to 大義滅親?
This piece of news was announced so matter-of-factly as if it is natural and this is what is the most unnerving.
so near to my home... 10 min walk

I think i've similar sentiments as you when I first saw that news. It came across to me that "woah, SMRT not enough money to build a depot, need Govt sponsor uh?" Something along that line.

Its a valid concern. I too am worried it will be just another case of wayang.
We are very unlikely to emulate the London bus model fully for this simple reason:
These EU countries' basic aim is to minimise subsidy to bus services (thus implying that running at losses is to be expected and help should be rendered to PTOs).
SG's basic aim has been to ensure profitability (which was why public kpkb while many other countries subsidise public transport assets on a regular basis).
But one still can't help but get the feeling that the govt is clearly going to reign in the PTOs slowly but surely. Rail side contract has also been slashed from 30-40 years to just 15 years. LTA is definitely flexing its muscles to show who's boss, though to what end, we'll see. The CCL woes and the COI in recent years have made it even clearer that the contract with SMRT for rail provision have loopholes and oversight. It is likely that LTA will be reviewing the contractual terms and wielding the stick even more.
Actually these really should not be surprising news. And I blame the media for it....
Same thing as the Bukit Brown hoo-ha....it was announced that the exhumation would take place in the early 1990s, 20 years ago....but the public seems to have the idea that this was planned only recently.
Beside this Wenya or Jurong West Depot,There should be Ayer Rajah replacement bus park and another SBST bus park near Sengkang/Punggol too in future
Why is it a distance from SMRT area? :/
