The two bus companies will stop operations if the government did not inject public funds to help them buy more buses to meet growing demand, said Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, who is sounding more and more like a spokesperson for SMRT and SBS Transit with each passing day.
Mr Lui was confronted with an angry resident during a community event in the constituency of Cheng San-Seletar who asked why the government chose to spend $1.1 billion dollars to purchase a fleet of 800 buses for the two bus companies when their services have not improved for the last few years.
In response, Mr Lui replied:
“If the government did not inject more funds, the operators will have to increase bus fares by as much as fifteen cents to cover the operating costs.”
Mr Lui explained that the $1.1 billion dollars will be used to subsidize the commuters’ bus fares and not to ‘compensate’ the bus operators, adding that they will be forced to fold up and stop operations if the government did not do so.
Both SBS Transit and SMRT are partly owned by Singapore’s giant sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings either directly or indirectly through its many subsidiaries.
wow. fantastic baby.
good excuses
If both companies fold up then we will see more crappy buses with leaking aircon just like in the 80-90s..Singapore very demanding.
so SBS and SMRT must best make use this money to buy 800 Citaros, Citaro Gs and Wrights!!
He isn't exaggerating btw.
But Singkies want cheap cheap and good service. Where to find....
I can also tell you Made in Singapore products can be really crap. As good as MIC.
This. Is the end result. Of.
CHEAP, FAST, BETTER (?)
The same people who complain about crappy bus service probably can't get it into their heads that its because buses were neglected all these while.
But.
They have every right to be pissed.
Cost rose, but not income.
How?
Singapore public transport is not cheap.

You can get paid our BC's current salary and go drive a bus for me then.

No difference, public transport is still expansive.

I don't think anglophilia has anything to do with it.
You tell me why Singapore 75% chinese, 13% malay, 9% indian but is an anglicised society where everyone must know alien tongue to operate, then maybe we can talk about anglophilia.

That is what the old man stated when they want to raise the bus fares.
Since then, they have been making profits.
So, when they are making profits, where do all the money go ?
Maintenance not done properly ? Train quality in question ? Training of bus driver not adequent ?
After these few day of breakdown, why is SMRT so silent again ?
No more sorry ? Or breakdown is acceptable without any fine ?
Who is paying MOT his salary and bonus ?
Please dun threaten the people if you and your croonies are NOT raising productivity.
Show me your productivity before you comment on any wage increase.

I agree. They want to make profit.
So they would not spend a single cent to buy more buses. This means they would need more drivers and maintainence. BUT, the no. of people who need to take the bus is the SAME. This means the buses will be less crowded; the cost of the vendor would then increase.
So now government spend money on 800 new bus, why complain?? Citaro bus no good??
You got it MORE wrong.
They will be importing MORE people to fill up the bus to generate MORE profit.
So, why should the people's money be put to two bus company that generated profit that do not return to the people ?
Even though they say the profit will go back to the cheng hu, what confidence do you have in a cheng hu who refused to take action when the train system collapsed for two consecutive days and the people involved are still unable to deal with the breakdown ?
If what they say in the beginning of the hearing that proper check was done by the authority and maintenance was performed over and above by the train company, did the train and rail system have a life of its own and decided to go MC ??
Please bring more money or top up your ezlink card for your train trip tomorrow.
They inject money into the companies so that the companies can have record profits annually.

But they big profit they can buy more Citaros!!!
Does not make sense.
If the government needs to pump in money so that the transport company does not fold, then why privatise it in the first place ?
With more profits, they will reward themselves and major shares holders with bonus.
Cut more cost with employing foreign drivers.
And ask for more money from Ah Gong.
And ask for fee increase since they never increase fee in 2012.
To answer your question: Fund conversion.
Go figure it out.
MRT breakdown again
Well, all i can say is using scare tatics seems to work here.
KMB said the same few months back, nothing was given.
Who's KMB?
It's true gahmen got offer private co to join but they dun meet the criteria,You need at least 3 Depots/Facilities and at least 600 Low Floor buses..I think Woodlands Tpt also din meet the expectation
