  SMRT fined S$100 for overloading bus by Sumita Sreedharan Updated 10:09 PM Oct 25, 2012 SINGAPORE - SMRT has been fined S$100 by the authorities in the latest service standards survey for exceeding the number of passengers allowed on one of its bus services. The infraction occurred last December when bus loading on SMRT service number 925 was 98.4 per cent, exceeding the 95 per cent loading allowed during weekday peak hours. Despite the single offence, SMRT was given a pass in the six-monthly Quality of Service (QoS) standards survey by the Public Transport Council (PTC). The other public transport operator SBS Transitpassed as well. The operators were assessed for reliability, loading and safety between December last year and May. In the previous review for June to November last year, SBS and SMRT were fined S$400 and S$800 respectively for not meeting the loading standard. Operators can be fined S$100 for every loading or headway infraction as dictated by the QoS standards. For failing to run at least 96 per cent of its scheduled trips for each bus service, operators can be fined S$1,000. For a high rate of accidents or bus breakdowns, operators can be fined S$10,000. Compliance with the loading standard is assessed at the bus stop with the highest bus load during peak periods. The bus loading at that point is measured against the buses' licensed capacity to determine if it is within the stipulated 95 per cent. "The actual performance of bus services is continuously tracked by the bus operators' computerised fleet operation and management systems," said a PTC spokesperson. Performance reports of all bus services are submitted to the PTC for assessment every month. The PTC also audits the operators' reporting processes to ensure that the reports are accurate and complete. The current 95 per cent cap on bus loading will be reduced to 85 per cent at the end of 2014 under the Bus Services Enhancement Programme (BSEP), which will see more buses deployed. Responding to queries, SMRT explained that the incident had occurred as they had experienced a shortage of bus drivers during the period of the incident. The operator assured that it closely monitors the passenger loading patterns of their bus services and conducts regular reviews on bus capacity to cater to changes in passenger numbers.

  Extension of Train and Bus Services on Eve of Deepavali

  SBS Transit will be extending the operating hours of its bus and train services on the eve of Deepavali, Monday, 12 November 2012.

  TRAIN SERVICES

  On the North East Line, the last train in the direction of HarbourFront will depart Punggol Station at 12.02am, Serangoon Station at 12.13am, Dhoby Ghaut Station at 12.25am and Outram Park Station at 12.31am.

  The last train towards Punggol will leave HarbourFront Station at 12.29am, Outram Park Station at 12.32am, Dhoby Ghaut Station at 12.38am and Serangoon Station at 12.50am.

  Services on the Punggol and Sengkang LRT systems will also be extended to coincide with the last train arrivals on the North East Line. The last train on the Sengkang LRT will depart the Town Centre Station at 1.05am while the last train on the Punggol LRT will leave the Town Centre at 1.07am.

  BUS SERVICES

  To complement the extension of the train operating hours, the last bus timings of 26 selected bus services - 51A, 60A, 63M, 181, 222, 225G, 228, 229, 232, 238, 240, 241, 243G, 261, 269, 282, 291, 292, 293, 315, 325, 333, 334, 358, 359 and 410W - will also be extended at their respective bus interchanges.

  pushing people down any bus is an offence... in fact the matter is now before the courts... saying such comments, you 228X can be hauled up to court for taking no respect to the court and law... by then next bus nutter to be charged to court is SMB228X.. We know your face by then...

  Today newspaper got news about the 2010 Sun Gee King Long CNG bus fire . Driver complained about gas leak, but King Long mechanic said that there were no problems, however in the end, caught fire and killed the driver.

  what if he is just listening to the movie? it is very tiring and boring driving the same bus route everyday, cant the SL have some company? better than he dozing off at the wheel right?

  even train drivers play games, eat, watch movies while on duty.

  flawed. for safety reasons a bus driver should NEVER be doing that, what do you want the bus to focus on, the sound, the movie or on driving?

  Listening to earbuds while driving is illegal. However, listening only to one earbud is not illegal. Thus, the driver can listen to music while driving. But with only one side of the ear piece.

  Off topic. Took 960 rego 1234T driven by PRC. Pax pressed bell in advance but PRC driver inadvertently skipped the stop bcoz he was bz talking to another PRC man. Bell wasnt spoil and it was loud and clear. Pity the Bangladeshi worker who got to drop at Kranji MRT and walk back 1 bus stop

  It's all right to listen to music using a loudspeaker, but not watching movies. That's dangerous. No matter how mudane the job is, safety is still the top priority.

  You think it is fun to drive and watch movie at the same time? You haven't got your license, so keep your comments for yourself. A minute with eyes off the road in front is a potential hazard to you and others. I tried SMS-ing using HP for less than a minute, end up almost colliding a cab in front.

  I think non-drivers dont realise also that even something like checking blind-spot or even side-mirror can lead to an accident if luck is not on your side and the front fella pull some stunt when your eyes aren't there.
