Public transport fare adjustments to take into account bus drivers' wage increase
SINGAPORE: Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said on Thursday public transport fare adjustments, due next year, will take into account the need to raise bus drivers' wages.
Mr Lui was speaking for the first time in the aftermath of the illegal strike by bus drivers from China last week, and said public transport cost increases over the years have outpaced fare adjustments.
He was trying out the route of a new service on Thursday under the government's billion-dollar Bus Service Enhancement Programme.
Mr Lui said authorities will look closely at what the fare review committee says about how adjustments should be made.
He said there is concern of the lingering effects of the recent strike on recruitment and retention of bus drivers.
Mr Lui said: "Any fare adjustment will allow the two operators to have more resources, in time to come, to make further salary adjustments to their drivers. We recognise that the drivers need to be paid more. (The) question is, where is that money coming from?
"So we need to see the relationship between any fare adjustment, wage increase, and any other forms of government support that we might be required to give to the operators."
From December 16, two new SBS Transit bus services will start plying under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme.
Service 50, which will start service on December 16, will cover Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang, Sengkang and Punggol.
Express Service 513 will start on December 17, connecting residents of Tampines to the Central Business District. This service only runs during the morning and evening peak period on weekdays.
In addition, four new bus services will be added to the bus network in the first quarter of 2013.
Three of them come under the government's enhancement programme, while the other is a trunk service by SBS Transit at its own cost.

72 should revised its timing.Non peak the buses crawl sia even at Old Tampines rd.I dun mean the buses should speed above 60 but at least reasonable la
72 is ridiculously slow.
How in the world is it ok to take 50 min to get from HG Swimming Complex to Tamp Int at off-peak??
They should cut the runtime leh too good liao
151 also another one that need revision.
1.5 hrs to get from HG to KR is too generous now, especially with the completion of the woodsville construction.

I love the old 151,Both depot last time know their stuff.Todae kinda slow at Bt Timah
I gave up on 151.
Last time was unreliable, but fast.
Now is more reliable, but unbearably slow.
A B9TL on afternoon off-peak once took only 45 min from HG to KR. A journey time of slightly over an hour is possible without having to chiong like that crazy fella did.
But the normal journey now takes double the time.
My record on a Mk2 CAC 44 mins from KR to HG last time and no prize for guessing who
Ya. That sort of timing is entirely possible.
But really need to chiong all the way and my B9TL also cheated by overtaking another 151 and refusing to stop for pax at the next stop.
Quite pointless IMO. But a 1hr 10 min or so journey is quite comfortable for non-peak.
Given the traffic cond 7 years back 44 mins is record breaking lol
Timing also matters of course.
ffwd151e takes 1.5hrs evening peak.
Hardly fast and forward.

Those express means for those who didn't want crowded buses with high pricing but again ffw svc nowadays all crowded also.

Rest assured 151e is very popular.
Especially the morning route, the bus gets full at Toa Payoh.
Jialat...161 or 168 more faster
