SINGAPORE: SMRT is taking disciplinary action against a 58-year-old bus driver who was unwell on the job and allegedly dozed off at the wheel.
This was after the transport operator received complaints from 20 passengers who rode on SMRT bus number 857 from Boon Keng Road to Yio Chu Kang Monday night.
"The bus was very shaky and swung drastically... Someone in the front shouted 'the driver is sleeping!'," said a passenger.
"Everybody shouted at him before he stopped. But when we tried to alight, he refused."
All passengers eventually alighted at a bus-stop along Yio Chu Kang after the four-minute ordeal.
Some even claimed that the swinging motion of the two-carriage bus caused hurt to some passengers.
SMRT said that the bus driver had made an incorrect judgment and continued to drive, instead of reporting to the bus operations control centre that he was unwell.
It added that the driver should have pulled the bus over immediately in a safe manner.
Arrangements would have been made for the passengers to continue their journey on another bus.

bad service one case after another and yet dare to increase fare. Money face PAP !
I believe he might be in a finance issue. Thats why he still continued driving even if he is sick.
He should have just stopped at the road shoulder...
How dangerous it is on the expressway
luckily no serious RTA occured..

They're humans...
Ppl work long hours for a shift...
And your long name, I think aft a night I figured just exactly who you're with your branded vulgarity and political bashing.
Clones who ran away aft being exposed.
I think he doesnt meant it. its a driver syndrome. when u are very tired, you may just doze off the wheel. it is well documented, just ask those who drove all day, esp the TD.

Some people are known to be able to sleep more easily than others.

In fact, the driver is 58-year-old, this makes him easily doze off.

Introduce more split-shift.
As far as I know, parliament is the only safe place to sleep.
Dangerous driver endanger lives!@
SMRT would still have punished him if he had reported sick.
Whatever the case this time, SMRT still has some serious issues across the board.
sad, pull over call occ nothing liao, but should not punish also (or not too heavy) as when sick judgement will be bad
ah... scheduling problem...
bus companies should take note of loading patterns...
just like sat, sun when loading is not gigh, reduce the number of duties,
las sunday, sv196,sv14 was running like peak period schedules, 10min per bus and all the buses was only 10% full...
ACx

Maybe SMRT not enough drivers, so they called him in. BC also lan lan as he feared the sack if he did not comply.
In the end, the management wanted to cover their asses, so the poor BC made scapegoat for their shortcomings.
Managers are supposed to take responsibility, not pay someone to cover up their mistakes. But then again if all managers were perfect, there'd be too few jobs for PR personnel/executive assistants.
