JOHOR BARU: Gemilang Coachwork Sdn Bhd has teamed up with Singapore Technologies Kinetics Ltd (ST Kinetics) to build coaches for SMRT Corporation Ltd (SMRT), the biggest land transport service provider in Singapore.
Kinetics is the main contractor for SMRT.
For a start, Gemilang signed with ST Kinetics for a RM60 million contract to build 200 low-deck coaches for SMRT over a period of 12 months.
ST Kinetics (automotive services) vice-president Spencer Tan said Gemilang had provided a unit to SMRT for trial last year and it had received positive feedback from both passengers and drivers.
"In this tender, we partnered Gemilang for bus body design and build. As an established supplier for over 1,000 bus bodies in Singapore, Gemilang has given SMRT the confidence in the delivery of high quality products," he said after the signing of strategic partnership agreement between Gemilang and ST Kinetic last Friday.
Gemilang executive director Phang Sun Wah represented the company during the signing, while ST Kinetics was represented by Tan.
Tan said ST Kinetics chose Gemilang because of the latter's track record in building modern buses for the domestic and overseas markets. "We are also impressed with its European design."
Gemilang will be producing the bodies, while the MAN chassis are supplied by ST Kinetics. MAN is among the leading marques in the global commercial-vehicle manufacturing.
All the buses will be delivered to SMRT in stages, with the last fleet to be delivered by June next year.
SMRT, one of the two public bus operators in Singapore, has a fleet of 700 buses. The 200 buses are part of their fleet replacement and expansion programme.
Meanwhile, Phang said the European designed buses boast low noise level and maximum comfort, as well as friendly to the disabled.
Gemilang also expects closer partnership with ST Kinetics to serve Singapore passengers.
