Originally posted by Spanish hog:But it seems the pax boarding at Tampines is mainly short haul as in they will disperse along TP Ave 9 right? I doubt many will ride beyond Hougang and from Hougang Ave 9 onwards, it's occupancy is more or less like 58 on non peak, NYP rush hours.
My comment is more on reference to weekend ridership. Weekdays peak no need say. I also experience B9 with upstairs standees.
Actually, weekday off-peak, night-time, both terminals will have fantastic crowd.
From YCK side, the crowd only alleviates at Hougang.
From Tampines side, usually the bus still has a lot of people on board even after many people alight at Tampines...and then when it reaches Hougang Int, the whole cycle starts again.
This service is practically packed throughout the entire day because of its crappy off-peak frequency. Its my biggest gripe about 72 and why I was frustrated enough to take 88 instead from Pasir Ris.
The irony was that it used to be 88 with the crappy frequency and 72 with the dream frequency. Now 88 has improved, but 72 went into the back-water.
svc 291 from mon during weekdays pm peak will have one bus (non WAB slot) tat purely ply east loop for 5 trips. just like smrt eg svc 911e.
its just a downroute. nothing like 911E. 911E has terminating trips from both east and west loops. all 291 trips that serve the west loop will continue to the east loop.Originally posted by 28_29_293:svc 291 from mon during weekdays pm peak will have one bus (non WAB slot) tat purely ply east loop for 5 trips. just like smrt eg svc 911e.

Is it due to off peak fleet is only half its max no. at peak hours? Can they provide downroute or some 72A which operate in this format: YCK to HG Ave 3, turn about at Ave 7 there balik start at HG Ctrl Int. Cos the suay issue is the section between Hougang to Tampines Ave 10 is the ulu section like 174's Jurong Road and therefore on holistic view, depot ain't willing to send so many out at off peak cos u have such a low demand sector (AMK ave 5 also quite lull at off peak) but ironically, this cross country "townlink" has established too critical links like HG ave 9 to HG mall, so it's headache ah

I agree with that.
That also applies to Svs like 198

The solution is to go back home through Sengkang instead like I do now.
Going by Sengkang can actually be faster than going by Tampines Rd....a car would prove that point.
Seriously they should go back to the old days of proper trunk - feeder concept though they're duplicating routes.
Then impose penalty fares to shoo away those feeder commuters, priorities the boarding chances to the commuters who really need the bus.
Say a feeder bus bet Boon Lay & Jurong West St 42 to cushion 198's feedering load. Then 198's starting fare from BNL would be 81c (Into Jurong East) or +3.9km of distance fare for transferring commuters.
Neither do you wish to have problem of 'too many choices' see any bus departs just board.

How is ur route like? Lol i live at the blk 266 shop n save there sia but i'm not in favour of the always no seat 27 over 72 from tampines even if its fast evidently.
Tampines Rd > Buangkok Dr
Of course, semua semi expressway.

That's kinda true in your case.
I have 88, which is even more likely to have seats.
And somemore 72, I have to walk a bit. (I live at HG Ave 8)
my gf stays at HG street 91. i stay opposite Tampines MRT Stn busstop.
she is a sit-down-and-don't-want-transfer person.
i am a shortest-time-taken-don't-care-sit-or-stand person.
she'll take 72 to come here or go home. HG Ave 9 1st busstop. i'd go by 27 and switch to 161. it's a personal choice.
This is what I figured for 72
2 feedering legs could appear lor
Tampines - Tampines Ave 9/ St 71
Hougang - Hougang St 92
The rest there's no pt having feedering legs.
1999 to early 2000s, service 72 never had as much people....but then the same can be said for most services.

Eh
82, 111 n gang never got its glory back
Even 170 these days no more bao jiak packed buses on weekends le
It's becoming peakish. Sat afternoon is abt 70% - 90% towards JB, avg 25% loading into SG.

That one dont say la.
The extreme case is 161, last time 9 SDs, no problem, now I think 13 (?) buses....nearly full DD fleet and the bus is still packed.
And what's this....last bus full and cannot board at Woodlands, kena STOMPED somemore.
161 & 168..
long queue at Woodlands forever
Seriously when I was at Woodlands this afternoon.
80+ queue for 168, a Wright come all cleared in 3 mins.
80+ queue for 950, a OC500Le came and ends up ppl along the way can forget abt boarding.
SMRT should repent. For it's feeder buses still treating alighting bay as parking bay.

Blame it partly on the unreliable 965. For 161's case.
Say....I need to get to Sembawang, FAST from Sengkang. Taking 965 and then train is a a logical choice but its also like playing roulette with its crappy frequency and unpredictable speed at which the BC drive. I would rather take 161 to Woodlands and take train.
There's just so many reasons to be unhappy with SMRT seriously. Everytime I suggest the fastest route and its anything to do with SMRT, 3/4 the time, I dio dua and I get screwed by people.

at least you cannot beat me. friend ask for advice how to go Jalan Kayu from Woodlands............ i totally forgot about 168 and told him to take........... 858. WIN!!!!

you deserve to get screwed then.
wonder svc 291 weekdays all s shifts mayb is DD cos is non WAB slots somemore.
like this u will incur more buses on the road and not optimising resources and infrastructure efficiently. A number of trunk+feeders are working well now and had proven it to be.Originally posted by sbst275:Seriously they should go back to the old days of proper trunk - feeder concept though they're duplicating routes.

I am a person like yr grandmother, i HATE to transfer. even if i need, it would be as less transfers as possible.
but occationally i would be like you too. one of thm is when i go to arport and back to my sengkang home. sometimes, especialy when i came back from airport in the morning, i would take 86<--->858 becoz i knew i would get sardined on 27(there are less than 10 people on board 858) and the OCs are number one, as quie as air, number two, vibraton tone perfest and number three, the white colour is nice, which made my morning rides even more comfortable.
But in majority, I take 27, probably becoz it has became a habit...

Unlikely
In fact long distance travellers' travelling time and boarding chances are made erratic with the feedering legs.
Say for Sv 30, say I'm waiting along Boon Lay Way I might not be able to board even if I'm heading to Pasir Panjang. For all we may know 80% alights inside Taman Jurong and the bus runs empty into Teban Gardens.
Furthermore at the Int, you can't differentiate out the feeder and long distance commuter. Sekali that trip is entirely feedering passengers.
Say for Sv 198, 6 mins freq would become irrelevant, as the actual freq is 9 mins to cater for the Jurong East demand.
I'd taken 198, it takes 25 mins to get from Boon Lay into Jurong East. 25 mins could get me from Jurong East into NUS.
