making it a bigger joke or insult
SMRT is carrying more passengers on a per bus basis than SBS.. yet lesser bigger capacity buses (in proportion).
Same goes to MRT sv level like train door dwell time too tight etc.
Wat to do? SMRT belongs to Temasek, profit 1st.
Wait
more pax per bus, yet SMRT whole day kpkb bus losing $$
how come ar???
Any case I stand by e S Shift issue, + add to insult 6 hrs recharge time.. how to recharge on time???
SMRT epic fail
SHENZHEN: Transport operator SMRT is poised to become the first company to use electric buses and taxis in Singapore.
Chinese car giant BYD said SMRT has ordered 10 of its e-Bus electric vehicles while the first right-hand-drive units of its e6 battery-powered taxis will also be bound for the Singapore firm.
Ms Nancy Mao, BYD's sales manager (overseas group), said the buses cost about US$650,000 (S$804,000) each - or about 70 per cent more than the average cost of a single-deck diesel-powered bus.
The e6 is said to cost around US$40,000 each, or 20 per cent more than the equivalent taxi here.
Ms Mao was speaking to delegates from the Land Transport Authority and Institution of Engineers Singapore, who visited the Chinese manufacturer's plant in Shenzhen earlier this week.
SMRT, which is majority-owned by Temasek Holdings, said details of the BYD deal were still being ironed out.
It said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the firm - one of the world's biggest producers of electric and petrol-electric hybrids - to explore possibilities of establishing a joint venture to 'develop, distribute and sell electric vehicles' in Singapore.
SMRT's executive vice-president of commercial business and roads Teo Chew Hoon said: 'Exploring the use of electric vehicles in our fleet is one area which we are actively looking into. At this point in time, we are in the early stages of discussion with BYD.'
Despite the higher initial purchase cost, electric buses and taxis are expected to offer operating savings.
Each public diesel bus consumes around $160 worth of fuel a day while electricity tariffs to charge each e-Bus are expected to be around $80 - a 50 per cent saving. Savings for taxis will be smaller, at between 20 and 30 per cent.
BYD's Ms Mao said the company's first right-hand-drive electric buses - China is left-hand drive - will be rolled out from August.
The first deliveries of the right-hand-drive e6 taxis will be made in June next year.
Ms Teo of SMRT said the arrival of vehicles will depend on when the charging infrastructure - which Singapore has been planning for over a year - is ready.
BYD started in 1995 as a battery maker with 20 employees, serving mainly mobile-phone makers.
It now has 200,000 employees and is ranked as one of the biggest manufacturers of electric and hybrid vehicles, producing about half a million a year.
It will deliver 200 e-Buses to the Shenzhen government next month and 600 by the end of the year.
It aims to be the biggest automaker in China by 2015 and the world's biggest by 2025.
American billionaire Warren Buffett acquired a 10 per cent stake in the Hong Kong-listed company in 2009 at HK$8 per share. BYD shares closed at HK$24.55 yesterday.
SMRT belong to the GOV and our GOV has strong link to China ma so need to support the china company.
Dunno why but ive got strong feelings that SMRT would buy DDs in future. They should look for Enviro 500
I doubt govt would ask SMRT to give up their bus ops consider their motto multi-modal transport company. Both SBST and SMRT got their rail and bus ops.The only best decision i can think is SMRT to handover Bukit Panjang,Choa Chu Kang,Bukit Batok and Kranji Depot to SBST.In return all Bt Merah Svc except svc 132 & 153,Harbourfront svc except svc 80,195 from Marina Ctr,Buona Vista svc except svc 74 & 185,Kent Ridge svc except 151 to SMRT.They can opt to take Ayer Rajah bus park or just built a depot near Pasir Panjang or Commonwealth there. At least majority of the bus svc there can use more rigids.
So SBST from BBDEP control all Bt Batok svc except 852,Clementi and Ghim Moh as well as 160.Kranji bus park control CCK & BPJ svc and 170.
SMRT Ayer Rajah Depot can minor control svc like 167,851,65,93.RWS8 also near to the depot itself.

Transfer back to SBST better. Would like to see better bus services and double deckers back in these places again.

Better don't transfer those SBST services to SMRT. Will just make things worse, services like 16, 32, 65 will be serverely affected.
But I welcome the transfer back of Northwest services to SBST. Miss the SBS days. SMRT can just fully concentrate on good services in the north.
IMO SMRT is doing well for the west sector.
Cheers.

My friend who lives in Bukit Panjang rather drives to work than taking bus, even if the parking fees are high in the CBD. He told me he can wait for 966 for an hour, which is pretty true. How can they be doing well??? I think even SBS and TIBS can do better.

Sorry to burst your bubble but, a few things.
If your friend living in Bukit Panjang rather drive to work than take a bus, that's not very unusual if he has a car. Because if you already bought a car (less a weekend car), would you just dump it in the parking lot for it to collect dust (and still have to pay road tax, parking charges) and take public transport to work?
The story would be different if he does not have a car, but cannot afford to buy one and drive it to work. In this case, then the govt has done a good job in reducing congestion by cars by raising the cost and making cars a luxury item. However they would really need to solve the congestion problem in public transport now.
Also, what does 966 have to do with CBD? The most i have waited for 966 is 30mins at marine parade, but that's what you get for a service that runs on the expressway which is easily prone to jams which is ironically caused by people who rather drive to work than taking public transport.
Instead of saying SBS and TIBS can do better, do you have any solutions in your mind to this problem? Why not make it a point to wake up earlier and take the premium services if you want to go to work on time and in comfort.

Well said guys. One of the reasons why i like to drive in neighbour countries or drive at night here. Its just too congested. Our dear Gahmen die2 must target 6.5 m despite limited land.SG already so small yet nearly half of the population are instant noodle type citizens.HDB flats price are so absurb.Dunno what the figure in 5 years time.
SMRT Buses should get the Volvo B9TL 2 axles 310hp option with length of 10.8m AC!
Buy more Citaro batch 11 and Volvo B9L 260hp.Better than buying a small bulk of piece of junk buses from one particular country.550 rigids and 350 2 axles DDs for their fleets is more than enough.

You can't blame the company for not doing well. Even if SBS Transit take over 966, it's still the same. No matter what buses they are using, it all depends on the traffic. Even 1 Double Deck bus come, it will get full load and people got to wait for an hour due to traffic jam.

In my opinion, I'd rather GLBP be used for those central services though, eg 106,67,167 etc.
