anyone read the straits times today? BYD said SMRT has ordered 10 e-Bus electric vehicles from them. they had also purchased battery powered taxis from BYD. The right hand drive version of the electric bus will only go into production this August, while the first deliveries of the right hand drive version of the battery powered taxis will only be made in June next year. SMRT says the delivery of the vehicles will depends on when the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles is ready.
this should be the model SMRT is buying

Science bus?? With tons of Solar Panel on top..
Some background info, BYD is a chinese automotive company that builds mainly electric vehicles and Warren Buffet currently has a 10% stake in it.
The K9, when in a full low floor configuration, stores its batteries ontop of the wheel arches and weighs only 6 tons (compared to 11ton which other full sized 12m buses typically weigh) and propulsion is fully achieved by 4 hub motors located on each of the wheels.
Retail price of this in RMB is approx 2-3 million, which is about 380k- 570k sgd as of today (which means smrt has been ripped off). Range is about 250km, and takes 6 hours to recharge its batteries to full or 30mins for a fast recharge to 50%.

Oh, and if u are wondering how does this thing sound when its moving, just think of the LRTs.

It will look great, I think.
the cost of an electric bus is around 70% more than a single deck diesel-powered bus. also the battery-powered taxis cost 20% more than the equivalent taxi here.

The seating arrangement looks similar to Dongfeng and Anyuan buses in RapidKL fleet.
go green

Well, i wouldnt say its going green. Just more of a illusion of green. Batteries are made up of precious metals such as lithium. Such metals are rare and we might deplete these non renewable resources quicker by the use of electric vehicles. This is highly unsustainable in my opinion.

I would rather they get Scanias, even KUBs I am fine with them.
China buses are not realiable at all. CNG bus caught fire, accident and front totally smashed, etc.
And electric power technology is still immature, especially for heavy vehicles and very expensive and not efficient for demanding operations.
Daimler is a partner in BYD's electric vehicles business. Also the K9 has already rolled-out in China

800k each wor. even if they dun wan get add, at least spend the money somewhere that helps with the frequency, or at least invest it in their version of iris or something. 500k more just for a electric bus is just not worth the money. The difference can never be collected back even if fuel prices double for the entire life of the vehicle.

They shld just friggin get DDs and go do smth about their depots instead of trying to claim bragging rights where they can as they have been doing.
they srly shld have just brought in 1 as a demostrator.
10 is too much and it's not really a proven model.
If you do read the article, they are going into the business of selling these electric buses and cars...
lol look at this:maybe from 1.11 onwards.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypXE98jzg_Y
