OVERALL public transport fares will dip by 2.5 per cent from July 3, but savings will vary from commuter to commuter.
The Public Transport Council, in its latest annual fare review, said the 2.5 per cent reduction arises from the fare revision formula, which pegs adjustments to national inflation and productivity figures. As Singapore was in a recession last year, the formula gave rise to a rare fare reduction. This followed a fare freeze the year before.
The PTC will also roll out completely a distance-based fare regime. Transfer penalties, which have been reduced gradually over the last two years, will be completely gone from July 3.
Transfer penalty refers to subsequent boarding charges a commuter who makes transfers has to bear. From July 3, the same commuter will be charged solely according to the distance he travels - regardless of how many transfers he makes.
Not all commuters, however, will benefit from the change, although the PTC said two-thirds will save about $25 a year. The other one-third will experience higher travelling expenditure, to the tune of $16 a year. In this group will be senior citizens, who will have to spend on average $23 more a year on commuting.
Typically, bus commuters who choose to or have to make train transfers will see higher expenses. One of the reasons for this is that train rides generally cost more than bus rides.

I refer to this line:
Transfer penalties, which have been reduced gradually over the last two years, will be completely gone from July 3.
Then I refer to the last paragraph:
Typically, bus commuters who choose to or have to make train transfers will see higher expenses. One of the reasons for this is that train rides generally cost more than bus rides.
So.... uh.... if I go from Marine Parade to Paya Lebar MRT, take the MRT to Clementi, then switch to another bus to NUS..... do I pay more or less than what I'm paying now?
Yes to ur question. They are companies out to maximise profits. So...
Seeing that more ppl do transfer on mrt, they raise fares for mrt transfer will raise their profit.Really simple logic.
The price increase will nvr come down.In the world of business, everything goes up will nvr come down.hahaa

Last paragraph started with "Typically" which means they are referring to the current fare structure. It makes no sense to have throughfare if travelling by train cost more than bus.
Yeah!!! Finally!!!
Is it because of the drastic drop in price of crude oil at USA currently?
In Channel News Asia's article, it is interesting to see that capping concession fares at 7.2km or 9 fare stages.
It looks like there might be two to three fare bands for concession card holders.
On buses and NS/EW lines, it looks like boarding fares will be equalised at 71 cents. CC and NE fares will be 76 cents.
Based on these three facts, I deduce:
Or
I'm interested in seeing the finalised fare tables. Here's hoping that the fare bands will be amended to ensure that current single trips will be charged at the lower fare of transfer trips.
Current system allows a cheaper fare for 4+4 ($0.88) stages compared to 8 stages ($1.11), 4+4+4 stages ($1.07) compared to 12 stages ($1.21) and 4+4+4+4 stages ($1.26) compared to 16 stages ($1.31).
hooray for tcp.

SMRT supports PTC move
SMRT says it supports the implementation of Distance-based fares.
Its chief operating officer Yeo Meng Hin said it will provide commuters
with the convenience of different travel modes and encourage commuters
to use the public transport system.
In spite of the fare reduction, SMRT is committed to further assist
commuters who require financial assistance through its various
programmes.

Read between the lines...
i dun tink PT companies will reduce fares when the economy is picking up n crude price is on the way up...
One key improvement in the transfer rules:
Maximum allowable transfers from 3 to 5. i.e. total 6 bus/train rides within 2 hours of 1st boarding.
I feel that it is rather confusing for the commuters. So, if a commuter takes a bus and transfers to a train, where will be his fare?
Will the fare band be under bus or train?
Fare cut then fare cut. Make it simple. Don't throw in so many texts & confusions la. *rolleyes*
reduce MRT fares la.
So profitable yet cost more than buses.
haha

MRT?
Like they say...
Typically, bus commuters who choose to or have to make train
transfers will see higher expenses. One of the reasons for this is
that train rides generally cost more than bus rides.
If not, maybe MRT (the distance you take) + Bus (the distance you take)

But there is no transfer rebate.
Just give me one straight answer:
If I go bus ==> train ==> bus, do I pay more or less than what I am paying now?
I just want a simple 'more' or 'less'. I'm sick of all this bureaucratic mumbo-jambo.

thru fare no need for anymore tx rebate -_-
PTC's news release

More by $1.

I'm inclined to think that you will be paying more.
From point 6 in the press release:
Commuters travelling the same distance will pay the same fare for the same type of service, whether they travel direct or make transfers.
By my intepretation, this means that the distance-based fare will only apply for the same type of service. So your bus journey to Paya Lebar MRT is one fare and will be calculated according to distance = x
Then your journey by train from Paya Lebar to Clementi is one fare and will be calculated according to distance = y
Then your bus journey from Clementi to NUS is one fare and will be according to distance = z
After 3rd July there will be no more transfer rebates. So your total fare is x + y + z.
I did some calculations on my own for my journey from Tampines to NUS by train then bus. I'm looking at paying 40 cents more for a journey one way =X
Express 506's taking is going to be affected.
Only to collect 88c from MI students
If they take 985 - 66/ 157/ 174/ 178 ish 58c.
I would like to check... Is the current fare stage 0.5 per for every 400m distance?
If that is so, then 1 stage = 800m.
Example 1:
Bukit Panjang Road (Blk 270) >>> Toa Payoh Lorong 6 (Opp Blk 1)
Before:
$1.21 (190) (12 stages) + $0.91 (153) (5.5 stages) - $0.50 (transfer rebate)
= $2.12 - $0.50 = $1.62
After:
$1.25 (190) (12 stages X 0.8km = 9.6km) + 153 ($0.91) (5.5 stages X 0.8km = 4.4km) = $2.16
Cost: $0.54 more.
Example 2:
Marine Parade Road (Parkway Parade) >>> NUS (Opp Yushof Ishak House)
Before:
$0.69 (135) (3 stages to Paya Lebar MRT) + $1.46 (MRT to Clementi) + $0.91 (96) (5.5 stages 96 to NUS) - $1 Transfer rebate
= $2.06
After:
$0.71 ((3 stages X 0.8km) = 2.4 km ) + $1.46 (same) + $0.91 (5.5 stages X 0.8km) = 4.4km)
= $3.08.
So, fudgester, u will need to pay $1.02 per trip. $2.04 return every day.

wrong.
there's alrdy no more transfer rebate and it's thru fares
So if 190 - 153 is 12 + 5.5 = 17.5. Roughly it's 14km.
Hence new fare is $1.41 - $1.45
