How many of you have ever taken a ride onboard a bus, when a tyre decides to pack up and burst halfway through the trip?
What does it feel like?
now this is a topic that made me laugh.
right.
i've never experienced it before so i'd like to know what it feels like xD
possible meh?
or even worse when a tyre decides to burn
SBS7253S hahah
Aiyo this one isnt a good thing leh. Once this old Tata/Merc OF or whatever very old bus, similar to our late OF1417 in design, burst its front tire, resulting in the loss of control of the vehicle. The vehicle crashed head on onto a tree, killing some of the passengers. Happened last year.
If rear tire burst, still safe. But if front tire burst, it can be fatal.

Common mistake people make is to brake immediately after tyre failure.
Instead what should be done is to accelerate and keep the vehicle heading forward - let it stabilise before braking gently.

is that the VO2X that caught fire?

Yeah in Tuas South while cameoing on 182 :(
happened to me on 7485 on 143, regular weekday morn split. 1013 reach tpy and off. ah soon. of course tyre alr had smth sharp pierced through it but its fine cos tyres are made to be like that. however, when it made that sharp left turn entering at tpy int, the rotating tyre brushed harshly against the floor with holes " O O O O " meant to increase friction for slippery tyres during rain. thus, the tyre burst. the bus had a boom boom bam bam pff pfff sound after turning. immediately ah soon slowed down and quickly parked to the side, stopped and dropped people off. if you cant imagine the sound, sometime the 143 b9tl turn real quickly into tpy at the sides of the tag axle hits the body giving off horrid sounds but of course the tyres in tact.
the newer models, tag axle cant rotate at all just following the front axle which is bad.

tag axle=middle axle of all Double decks?
those buses like LO3x, VO3x i remember seeing their tag axles turning together with front axle.
sometimes the rear tyres are reconditioned so the reconditioned tubing that is glued to the tyre to create a new layer cracks and become detached...
I experienced once back in 1994 IIRC, when VO3X 1st started on svc147. The tyre burst along HG Ave 8 when I was on board of SBS9227E. BTW, that's my 1st time on VO3X when it revenued, and also my 1st time kena tyre burst. At that time was only the LH 2nd axle tyre burst, so there wasn't any mishap caused.
Cheers.

Never experience before too.

Tag axle is an axle not connected to the drive shaft and acts as a extra weight balance. It differs from vehicle to vehicle. On the Olympians, the 2nd axle is the tag axle, but on the Tridents, the last axle is the tag axle.

LO3X / VO3X / VSO / B9TL - 2nd axle is tag axle
Trident / K310UD / MAN 24.310 - 3rd axle is tag axle.
Basically the drive axle will be the axle with the hub in it.

the sound from the lower deck is horrid. whenever 80 turns sharply into sengkang there's this grinding from under the seat.. disgusting sound.

Adding on to the above information, turning (or rather, active) tag (or lazy) axles are present on the LO and VO 3-axle buses, but discontinued from the Super Olympian onwards. This was due to simplification in design and allowing a lower floor configuration.
For third axle tag designs, the above three examples do not have steering features, but the Neoplan Centroliner has this turning feature, and activates between 20 to 45 km/h.
Power axles are easy to identify with twin tires being the one, or if you are looking at the rim, those with the rim 'curving' inwards would also be the case.

nope. A front tire failure normally happens when the tire is damaged and the tire is under extreme loading, such as under braking or turning at speed. Even when going straight, a tire explosion can throw the vehicle into loss of control.
As an active mountain biker, my tire is always under abuse from sharp rocks, roots, pebbles etc from the offroad terrain. Some of the bikers in oversea countries have their tire cut by sharp rocks. As they descend a slope and turn, the forces resulted in the tire failure, which caused the rider to lose control and crashed horribly. It resulted in him breaking his arm..

Yeah. The tire is normally dragged across, which subjects the tire to massive lateral forces. Therefore sidewall strength and condition must be good, otherwise the tire can fail. Likewise in this case, the tire's sidewall had been damaged prior to entry to the int. When the bus made a sharp turn , the tire's sidewall is subjected to the massive lateral force. However the damaged it incurred previously meant that the sidewall couldnt withstand the lateral forces and the tire pressure within, which lead to a blowout.

rear i've never seen. but tag axle i've seen many times, especially those VO3/LO3.
when the tyre on the tag axle is worn it always seems like the top layer is ready to peel off anytime.

negotiating a turn makes a front blowout even worse. at certain speeds front blowouts can still be salvaged.
still though, referring to your reply to ben, yes because of this scrubbing its actually the sidewall which is more in contact with the ground now. thus the sidewalls must be properly maintained.
i'm just wondering if sbst checks tire conditions regularly or not, or do the drivers check. a few weeks ago, while waiting for a bus in ang mo kio, i spotted a svc 76 B9 with its right outermost rear tire sporting a huge bulge.
a certain section of the sidewall was bulging really badly. does this signify the possibility of a blowout? this isn't the first time i've witnessed such things - once a merc on svc. 86 had a portion of its rear tire sidewall bulging so badly it could be seen sticking out of the wheel arch when looking across the side of the bus.
