Give way to buses scheme is disingenuous:
1)How should cyclists react: give way or continue?
2)What if it is a taxi/ car etc exiting the bus lane: should other motorists give way?
3)How would foreigners (rental car drivers)/ Malaysian motorist keep track n abide by of our laws WRT road markings n bus lanes (BL): full day BL, normal BL, dotted line BL, single n double zig-zag n straight lines etc etc.
4)Is LTA reinventing the wheel, doesn't the current bus lane system work well; is LTA trying some ingenious way to save $$ by NOT having to paint usual bus lanes on the road???
5)Ambulance/ bicycle vs bus: in case of an accident, what are the rules of engagement then. Who should have given way? If LTA uses 'zebra crossing' logic, (http://www.onemotoring.com.sg/publish/onemotoring/en/on_the_roads/traffic_management/mandatory_give_way.html ) then EVERYONE has to give way to the bus.
Dunno what the LTA ppl were thinking, maybe just bored so wan to try sth new...

Personal views as follows:
1) If I am the cyclist, I would give way to the bus. But if I am driving the bus, I would let the cyclist go first.
2) Should not. They are not the 'intended beneficiaries'. Imagine people 'rushing for time', speed into the bus bay then expect others to give way and speed out...
3) It is indeed difficult. I will also have problem remembering. Or just keep to the second lane then...
4) The bus bay scheme is to speed up time leaving the bus bay.
5) Emergency vehicles will always have the right of way.
After this mandatory scheme of giving way have been implemented, indeed there are some dangerous situations, like buses which obey the rule and take the right, but cars just don't give way.
There are many times when I took a bus that leaves bus stops along lower BB East Ave 3 (services 77, 106, 189, Exp 506, 963) stops which has those schemes) and cars approach so quickly that they could not stop in time but the bus is already in the box and going out, they brake hard to a stop. Sometimes the bus cuts out into the lane but you can see from the car and its driver, they are not going to stop, whatever it takes! In the latter situation the bus captain would not care about the smaller fella, while the car is rushing to god-knows-where.
i have yet to take a bus or drive down these roads w/ this priority give-way to bus scheme.
what i'm pissed off with is the $*&#ing red lines for buses...
*&#$^ i turn out from a lane, i have to cut into the 2nd lane from the left immediately and back into the left lane to turn into my office.. all this is done within 100m
it's not safe and to make things worse, those who stray into the bus lane with the red line kena fined because the $#$%er from LTA station people there with video cameras
so i kena drive like some kind of maniac in order to get into my office driveway
wait till LTA puts a ERP gantry just before all bus stops and then vehicles will stay clear of that lane, and buses can exit their stops flawlessly.

sometimes got the bloody coach buses hogging the taxi stands
It is beneficial for the passengers in the bus at the end of the day. Usually if car vs bus scenario to reach a point destination, the car usually emerges to be faster.
Also, this scheme is also allowing the BCs to catch up and follow on their schedules given for their shifts.
hahah... creative idea croco2006.

Even as a public transport user I find the red line bus lanes in Orchard a pain in the @$$. Especially the Bideford Road area. What was meant to cut the duration for buses to exit bus stops ended up with buses weaving between 1st and 3rd lanes most of the time to avoid cars which are legitimately turning left.
Of course, the staggering of bus stops in Orchard indirectly contributed to the irony as well.
Crap, the Lentor bus lanes are contributing to the jams.
There currently no such lanes that I know of in Jurong West area....
Please lah... I ever witness that ppl drive into the yellow box during traffic jam and block bus exit...
With or without the thing, it still depends on the drivers...
I find this scheme by LTA stupid and impractical.
It only works effectively when a warden is there with his camera. Also, the reaction of other motorists are unpredictable hence damgerous. You never know whether they going to give way or not, thats why majority of bus captains still hesitate to exit when though the vehicle is preparing to give way.
There are a few times when I stopped for the bus to give way. The bus captain hesitated to exit till I stopped there for a few seconds. I also experienced stopping to give way to the bus because the right signal lights are on. But the bus captain did not exit and I realised boarding was still in progress.
Now, whenever I see a bus in bus bay and anticipate its exiting, I'll switch to the second lane to avoid the bus - which I think its a better idea.
To the minds of many of my friends, they find it impractical for them to give way to buses exiting, only to follow behind at slow speed; and this could add on to traffic jam on the roads too. Thats why they refused to give way.
But I'd strongly support the enforcement of motorists to keep clear of the yellow box next to the bus bays; to facilitate their smooth exit. Also, the Green B signal at traffic lights are useful in this sense; provided action is taken against other motorists who proceed.

Agree - some bus lane markings have been senselessly drawn by LTA.
I hate situations whereby turning out from a lane; I bump into the bus lane (esp in heavy traffic conditions!) and you see vehicles trying to avoid bus lane, cutting lanes here and there and worsening the jam and increase chances of accident.
Same applies to left turning - from 2nd lane I got to drive all the way to the end part and then quickly cut across to the leftmost lane to make a left turn. One fine example is the area at Boundary Rd (from AMK towards Paya Lebar direction) - before junction of Yio Chu Kang Rd.

I agree with you.
There are too many grey areas to look into. If a bus stops at a busstop with lots of passengers waiting to alight or board the bus, do we have to stop to give way?
It is also way too dangerous to stop a car midway along the road when there maybe other cars zooming behind at 70km/h.
watch this: http://202.157.174.100/20090806-ss-speedingadvert2/player.html
Also, some goondus will suddenly change lane to the right to avoid the bus lane and its ruling, leading to more accidents.

The finest part is....
After I switch to the centre lane because of a bus exiting from the bus-bay, and due to my need to turn left, I accelerated and then filtered left in front of the bus, the bus honked me...
And if that's not enough, after failing to move off in 0.5 seconds, the bus honked me again.
Seriously some of the BCs are asking for trouble.

I would just slow down and follow the bus. It's very dangerous to just cut in and turn left esp if ppl dun even take note
Orchard Rd area is really terrible esp Centrepoint there. Buses could end up stucked with the Centrepoint car park queue thks to cars using such method
The most terrible was 1 Sv 183 BC I spotted ytd
Knowing there's a mini van parking just bef Clementi MRT station bus stop still insist of wait till the hazard to filter out and flash headlights an horn wat's not. End up like a road bully
Dun they learn defensive driving technique?
