SBS Transit Rolls Out Six New Wheelchair-accessible Bus Services to Mark World Disability Day.
To mark World Disability Day, SBS Transit is rolling out a record of six new bus services on 2 December 2008 to cater to passengers in wheelchairs. These six Services – 64, 130, 183, 199, 232 and 268 – will bring the total number of wheelchair–accessible bus services that we have on the road to 22.
Since the launch of the first WAB service in June 2006, passengers–
in–wheelchairs (PIWs) have made some 7,000 trips on wheelchair–
accessible buses (WABs). SBS Transit continues to be the only public bus operator to offer wheelchair–friendly bus routes and has in fact, seen an increase in the number of trips taken. For the first 10 months of this year alone, 45 per cent more trips by PIWs were made on our WAB Services.
A frequent WAB service user, 27–year–old Mr Jan Lee who is an auditor with KPMG welcomed and applauded the move, “WAB services offer an economic mode of travel and I would say the more the merrier, so I can plan my routes more efficiently and have more access to places without train services.”
The introduction of WAB Services have also brought unprecedented convenience for PIW, Mr Gan Boon Leong, 58 who is a Master Craftsman at a production workshop under the Society for the Physically Disabled. “My wife and I could only afford to go shopping once or twice a year in the past because we could only get around by taxis,” Mr Gan shared, “But now we are out on most weekends because it's so cheap and convenient.” He also commended Bus Captains who have been most “friendly and helpful” on the WAB services he uses often.
