I'm looking for a good digital camera - budget $3000
and a good zoom lens - budget @ 1000
Any recommendations? -

SLR stands for "single lens reflex", just a type of camera.
seems like u're not too sure about photography yet. perhaps u wanna start with a lower budget and upgrade as u learn? having a big budget doesn't necessarily mean needing high end equipment since the learning curve is steeper.
anyway just to answer ur questions, u can get a cheap dslr with either a canon 300d or a soon to be released nikon d70. both come with kit lens, and cost around 2k. u can spend the extra 2k on a longer range lens, and accessories like flash, memory, spare batts, camera bag, tripod.. etc etc etc.. -

yeh sooooo rich!
i just spent what i considered a fortune in building a new PC but that did not add up to a 4k(3ooo + 1ooo)!!!!!! With 4k i can build one hell of a PC!
anyway i am kindda inspired by Photoshop.
i am thinking about getting a digital camera with a budget of up to S$800/-. it will take me maybe a couple of months or more to save up for that and i guess this coming payday i can forget about getting a 3-4 hundred dollars digital camera.
need something on my targeted camera that can let me play around with the settings - that's the learning curve!
ani recommendations?

anyway what are yr plans? do u intend to go into photography? as in how serious are u?
there are 2 types of photographers, i feel
serious, planning to make it a hobby, very serious type
leisure. takes pic of daily life,etc.
serious- go get a sony f828,nikon 5700/8700, canon pro1 IS,panasonic fz10
DSLRs-nikon d70,canon 300D (normal or black version)
Film SLRs, hmmm...
leisure. canon ixus,nikon coolpix sony, panasonic fz10
fz10 put in both cat. because the zoom is useful and the image stabilizer -
wah piang....can go for D100 also can...but then....why dun just go for a normal cam for practise?

If u wan a gd start out, Nikon CP 5700/8700 shd get u started quite well.

i aint a supporter of canon...i placed it there cos specs are good...
1 thing the l lens may not be as good as the real thing...
imagine how much a real L lens costs... -

thnks for the quick reply. i am not a serious photographer, not skilled orso, just triggerhappy at times. i wanted to get a sud 4 hundred digi cam but i guess i know what to expect from p and s with limited image settings and controls. yes i can use that to take daily pics but i know i will get tired of it soon. i want a unit that can get my brains, patience and finers working.
i have rounded down my options to Nikon and Canon (not that i am against the other brands, and Sony's prices are just too steep).
who knows maybe i will get serious about it one fine day? -

but the zoom beri good (up to 10x) no need telephoto lens already
if want to shoot wildlife.
but only 3.2 MP may fall shot in image quality.
IS (image stabilizer) dun know how effective leh?
if i should go for even slower shuuter speed may still need tripod right?
some more reviews says no AF assist, low light coditions may yield
results not as good as Sony's cam right?
operates on 4 AA battery instead of proprieter battery (good, very rare for a mid-range cam like the S1 IS), but better if operates on only 2 AAs right. i think the processor consumes power more than that of Sony's.
S1 IS is a good consider - any more inputs to make me change my mind? -

Not exactly since Pro1 belongs to digicam series, not DSLR. But it does have 2 optional lens(sold separately); telephoto and macro lens.
