I think have to focus in and out a few times for the camera to "know" the subject first before the camera is able to focus.
argh -
sometimes the cam is focusing on something else, something behind the subject u wanna shoot that has a higher contrast.
try to focus with a half shutter, then reframe, then press shutter all the way.
