St. Andrew's Cathedral Extension Project-Ground Breaking

The piece of land facing City Hall MRT exit and Capitol. In 15 months time, a 3 storey(one above ground, two basements) extension church building will be at this site.
Photo taken from the North Lawn. Singapore Archaelogy Team for the past one month has excavated several historical artefacts underneath this field. Items ranging from Song Dynasty Porcelain s, 1800s coins and some head badges and decors of the colonial volunteer corps and many more are found. They are displayed for exhibition today.
Nave of the Cathedral. The new extension will hold about 800 seats in its worship hall as well as a prayer hall, a chapel, a visitors' centre, sunken courtyard, garden and sunday school classrooms and other facilities.
Site of Ground breaking. The Bishop,The Rt Rev Dr John Chew, Dean The Very Rev Dr John Tay and Canon Rev Ong King Ming graced the occasion and ground breaking service. 23 Nov 2003, 4pm.

What's the function of a cathedral? Cathedral is a slightly bigger building that holds the Cathedra...which is a throne for the Bishop. Only Cathedrals have such thrones. Oh.. so am I right by saying that the difference is the size and the kind of functions held? That cathedrals are the ones that have more formal and more important functions? Usually only one Cathedral in a group of churches under it. Roman Catholic has their Cathedral at Good Shepherd(just opp CHIJMES) and they also have a throne there.
Basically, a cathedral is also a church with an extra throne and usually looks better and more grand . -
