i'm thinking of getting a digital cam

but i have NO idea what to get...
so i go with what seems nice
so far, looking at these 2.. one is a cute boxy one and the other looks like it's from outer-space...

i like them coz they look cool to me.. both are 5 megapixel jobs one has 4X and the other 5X optical zoom..
which one? decisions, decisions... more inclined to the latter one coz seems easier to hold in my paw -

Canon G3 (can get it cheap now that G5 is out)
Panasonic Lumix F7 or was it F1 i can't remember -

uhh.. like i said, i know nothing about them.. the only experience i had was with the office 3.3 Megapixel Mavica
your recommendations? i'll go have a looksee in cnet for reviews and the shops for a feel of them...

it's an expensive hobby... an i'm not.. budget-wise, gotta see what tickles me at that time just like i blew my budget when i was getting a notebook... my $3,000 budget got blown to heck when i decided on a $3,400 VIAO
mostly, just wanna take pics.. of everything
and usually i just get something reasonably brutal so that i can use it for many many years... sorta like my PCs
not sure if i should take the same approach with digicams... like i said, i know less than nothing apart from using the office Mavica...

how much is it? do i need to knock off a bank to buy it? a 6.3 megapixel job... and impressive everything... i think maybe 2 banks and a few armoured car robberies should cover it

that's the 300D isn't it?
anyway it retails in sg for just under 2k... comes with a lens, 17-55 which i heard is pretty good.
it's a dSLR so u might be on one hand having heaps of fun with, but on the other, a steeper learning curve.

ok i give u both. according to wat i know/experienced b4:
adv of DSLR over digicam:
- flexibility: able to buy different lenses to suit different needs.
- lower noise at equivalent ISO (due to bigger sensors, NOT bigger megapixels)
- MUCH BETTER auto focus speed and MUCH less shutter lag. i'll give u an example of shutter lag: i was shooting hummingbirds at jbp, framed my camera to wait for the bird to face me or look at me. then when he did, i snapped, and guess wat? he's not in the frame!! flew away already. that's what u call shutter lag, not to mention u have to deal with reaction time as well.
- SHIOK rating is much higher when u feel the shutter slap and the sound (but that's just a personal fetish of mine!)
disadv of dslr over dc:
- price much higher. u dun just worree about ur body, u worree about lenses, filters, TCs, extention tubes. investing in a SYSTEM more than a camera
- big and heavy compared to digicams
- not able to use the LCD screen to take photos (very important for many pple who like to frame using their screens, for me it doesn't matter i use my viewfinder all the time)
eh.. i think that's all i can think of for now. -

hmm cold shoe?? never heard of that leh... but anyway a hot shoe is one of those things on top of ur cam that u can stick an external flash on. of course u can fit on a whole studio set up with lights and stuff thru that too but let's not get into that..Originally posted by the Bear:still looking thru specs..

the ISO rating is a sensitivity to light. the higher the number, the more sensitive to light. so film rated at iso100 will need more light than film at iso200. needing "more light" basically means having a longer shutter, or a bigger aperture, or both.
the thing with iso is that the higher u go, the more grain u'll get (for film) and more noise u'll get (for digital). for dslrs, u can go up to iso800 with minimum noise.. for DCs if they even have an iso800 setting, they'll be so noise u probably could hand paint the picture urself better. ahhaah okokok exerggerating abit lar.. -

as for the cold shoe, i dunno either.. was reading through the L-shaped Sony one, and they compared it with the older model, and the older one had a "cold shoe"...
