  i think it depends. if u are refering to settings wise.
  
  manual is where u can control the settings of a camera. like u can select the aperature,shutter speed,white balance,ISO
  
  auto means, the camera selects everything for you. u just aim the cam.
  
  camera wise.
  manual is those film SLRs. to take a pic, u must charge a spring by forwarding a lever.rewinding the film is also manual.
  nothing is done by a computer chip, or shld i say, there is no chip inside controlling anything except for a metering chip that tells u whether u are underexposing the pic of overexposing.

  to be honest.. all brands are good.. or rather... none are bad (from those major players) it's just a matter of finding one that suits u, at ur budget. of course, most of us have no idea wat would suit us, that's why we always recommend a not so ex cam if u know nuts about cams and just wanna try out first. of course, bear and kopi have money so they got pretty high end ones anyway.
  
  copyright is a sensitive issue.. in most cases the photographer owns the copyright, but where there are "models" in the photographs, the proper thing to do to keep the copyright is to sign a "model release form"...
  
  i'm sure u'll dig up (or i can) if u really need help on this. in sg the rules are pretty lax... in US it's more stringent... i suppose...

  a full manual camera u have to adjust focus, aperture and shutter urself.
  
  semi-auto u can choose to change one or more of those settings, and the cam will choose the best settings for the rest that u didn't for you.
  
  full auto u dun choose anything, the cam does it for u.
  
  most semi-auto cams of course, have a full auto mode. the converse is not necessarily true.
  
  also, most semi-autos have have a full manual mode (technically), since in a semi-auto, u can set it to manual more for exposure settings (shutter and aperture) and change the lens to use MF (manual focus) mode.

  think of the camera as your eye.. imagine your eye can capture images just by blinking shutter speed is how fast you blink (not the rate).. aperture is how big you open your eyes, the bigger you open your eyes, the more light you let light enter.. it's a silly analogy but i think it should help u grasp the concept..
  
  changing between portrait, landscape and close-ups (aka macro) should be considered auto..
  
  semi-auto should be functions like aperture-priority, shutter-priority, etc
