Entry Level Compact Camera With Manual Functions

  Hi all,
  
  Am new to this forum.I'm actually interested in firework and night photography. Am currently using a Nikon S3 digital camera which does not offer me ay control settings other then the Scene modes. I'm wondering if there are any recommendations for a compact camera with manual functions for shutter and aperture available on the market which is below $500. Am actually thinking on getting a 2nd Hand Powershot A 510 /520 to tinker with before upgrading. Any comments on those two models?

  I heard some Nikon models are better for night shoots but i feel that without an image stabilizer it is recommended to accompany your shootings with a tripod. Most point-and-shoot digital cams offers limited manual settings though.

  Think Fujifilm is fine, except that the XD cards are pretty ex. compared to SD.Any idea whats the market price of the F30?

  I'm curious, is it possible to use filters by holding it infront of the lens?

  Filters are screwed onto the lens. If you want to hold them, it's unwieldy.

  I was thinking bout holding the filter, as one chap posted that he used his hand to hold the filter. I was like . Haha, F31 coming out soon, hopefully they will clear F30 cheap then. Just curious...do you know whats the diff. between the F10,F11,F20,F30? Because frankly...I'm thinking of getting something for practice purpose, preferably under 400.Don't mind if its 2nd hand even...but poor student me....haiz...

  Btw...does anyone know where i can get a memory card wallet? Something like LowePro sort.Any idea whats the price range of those?

  Casio EX-S600 and EX-S770 are quite good cameras...come with Best Shot function that preload setting into each mode that u want,eg B&W Nature etc etc..
  comes with manual as well...
  
  But its kind of expensive when i checked at cnet asia...749 for S600 and 699 for the latter...i got mine free,so i have no idea sry
