sounds like you have no idea wat u wanna shoot, but u just want a camera.
if that's the case, get the cheapest one you can find, i think atm the cheapest value for money type cameras are the canons made in thailand...
just get one first and see where u go from there.
usually when someone is choosing a camera i would ask them, what would you like to shoot? the more specific your answer, the easier to narrow down which cameras u would shortlist.
if you're a woman, get the best looking design. -

as for your last statement, u are really asking for trouble...
ok for travelling, anything goes, a disposable film camera works well. landscapes, u need wide, the wider the better. when you look at the specs u will find that most digicams will offer the widest angle at around 35mm (in terms of 135 format). 35mm isn't all that wide, if u can get something down to 28mm then that could be a plus point for that model.
as for people, it broadens into a few catogories, candids are easy, any cam will do, but if u're looking into portraiture or events then u need something slightly better. with portraits, the camera isn't the one that does the work, it's the photographer, knowing the angles and engaging the subject.
as for my last statement, i have a whole hoard of women who would agree with me (even if it takes a little probing b4 they admit it). they can fight with those that don't. i'll stand one side and photograph them, with glee. -
