This thread refers.
i finally FINALLY bit the bullet and justified the purchase of this lens... dun ask how much, the wound is still fresh and the bats are constantly circling me. altho bats dun really drink blood, they eat fruit.
i'll try to post some photos taken with this lens, i won't need to describe the lens in words, i'll let the photos speak for themselves. eheheeheh..

for those of you who want more indepth look at a photo by this lens, this is a 1.4mb jpeg STRAIGHT out of my S3 (no photoshop at all), with almost everything turned off. color, tone and sharpening in camera all off or org, with dynamic range at wide2 (which doesn't affect sharpness anyway), and at 6mp/normal. taken at iso800 @ f2.8. i THINK. check the exif.

ok hope i got more time to use this lens! for those of you who've seen my other long and thick, i've sold it last nite since i've upgraded. this new one is LONGER, but THINNER..
so, which one u think matters? length or thickness?

say, what's the zoom distance like?
in layman term, how far can u stand to shoot a pair of nipples as if you are right in front of them without having the len on?
btw, i dont think i'm visiting sentosa for another couple of months, given that my primary objective is volleyball. just screwed up my elbow and still having difficulties even to feed myself with right hand. -

erm.. i would LOVE to try to test out the exact distance on a live specimen, but maybe, let's use a more "common" example. ahahha
for a person who's head is on top of the frame, and feet below (in portrait orientation, meaning "vertical" photo) at 200mm on dSLR i would have to be about 20m away (maybe more)? if i add a teleconvertor (1.4x) to get me 280mm, i guess i'll have to stand 20mx1.4=28m away? hmm actually i never really noticed, just trying to remember from experience...
i guess i'll have to test it out properly hahaha

i think u should also know why the longer the focal length, the more prone to shake, at a given shutter speed.
the rule-of-thumb is that u shouldn't go slower than 1/focal length. meaning, if you're on 200mm, u should shoot at or faster than 1/200. but dun forget, with digital, there's a 1.5 crop factor, so at 200mm u should really be shooting at 1/300 shutter, which is pretty fast and not always practical.
there's where VR comes in. it is SUPPOSED to improve your shutter by at least 2 stops. so where u shake at say 1/125, u'd be able to go down to 1/30. it's hard to believe, but it works somewhat. anyway the reason for this lens purchase is more of the sharpness at 2.8 than the VR. but the VR (vibration reduction) is extremely helpful for smokers like me, who aren't very steady at the long end. just try to remember ur m16 firing days, breathing techniques, elbows tucked in etc.. same applies for long lens photography.. and anyway this isn't even considered long yet..
or.. use a damn monopod/tripod.
dun forget that camera shake isn't the only thing that u worree about when u have slow shutters. u also have to worree about whether u wanna record movement in your SUBJECT. so what if u can shoot at 1/4 at 500mm without shaking at all? the bird/person/flower-in-the-breeze will be totally blur if it moves within that time frame, which is highly likely. -

yeah sometimes it's good to have long "working distances" but then again.. 28m isn't far enuff for someone looking at u holding a long lens with a fat tummy to not notice u.
so, stand back further, and the person will look smaller, then CROP in photoshop ahahha.. that's where lens sharpness and detail will help tremendously, when u need to crop.
the lens cost in the early $3k region.... it's a "magic" number. a number of my equipment costs in that region..
if it's not that price, it's either sub 1k, or over 6k (of which i dun own any... but the d2x (nikon camera body - $7k) is giving all those that do not own one, nightmares...) -

well the saving grace in the money is that i can get most of it back second hand... even after many years. anyway this is a lens i probably won't sell unless i give up photgraphy. sometimes there are things u would like to take to ur grave. -

which is a 70-300 crappy non-constant aperture lens (i used to nikon70-300ED, the one i recommended u in the first place), then to the afd80-200 which i just sold and now this afs70-700VR.
if i could relive this path, i would hop from the 70-300ed to this vr one. skip the middle step. but of course, money was and is always an issue.
there are two pple that purchase this lens. (a) pple that can justify it becos they earn $$ out of shooting, and (b) pple who have enuff extra money to spend on this becos it makes them happy (or rather the shots that are produced makes them happy), incl pple that have a fetish of owning only the best, or "equipment measurebators".
i'd say i am 60% (a) and 40% (b)... -
