Evangelion. What's the plot actually?

  I have just finished watching the animation of Evangelion. I can't seem to get the ending. What's the story about?
  
  Are is Shinji's dad trying to clone his wife so that they can be together?
  
  The comic book and the animations are quite different.

  gendou (shinjis dad) is tryin to bring about instrumentality. which will allow him to become like a god... so tht he can get his wife back. rei is a vessel for all the souls tht will be released during instrumentality. depends on whether u watched the movie or not.

  The serial ending used a lot of flashback, made me very confused.

  But the parrallel world part very cute. They have Rei as the livlier student and Misato as their teacher. Very cute.
