The Geylang Scene

Located 5km to the East of the city and stretching along Geylang Road and selected lorongs, the area was given conservation status on 25 October 1991. It contains two-storey shophouses mainly of the Transitional Shophouse Style.
Geylang is a place where different stratas of society meet. From prostitutes to foreign workers to food lovers to residents. It is a melting pot of cultures, values and ideas. It is this collage of people and events that creates such richness in the landscape . To retain the character of geylang is to retain such richness. To highlight the differences, yet achieving a symbiotic amalgamation of these seemingly disparate elements is primary to the intervention .
Desire for sex vs desire for food. The homed vs the homesick. The glitzy nightlife vs the quiet days. The tall buildings vs the short buildings. These are the recurring polarities of the space that form boundaries between themselves. Such polarity provide the very potential of the site and impetus for intervention.
The intervention will be mixed-used. Housing a park-plaza, a museum, a community space, retail space and a cafe. The space is such that programs intermingle, both symbolically and physically. A place where the disparities of the site is discussed [if not reconciled]. The Geylang Culture Factory will be a microcosm of the culture of Geylang. Yet, when all is squeezed into this small space, unexpected events and activities can happen.
