People are fighting over pieces of rocks in the South China Sea. Does anyone seriously think Singapore, with its strategic location on the busiest waterway in world, is not an important real estate to own? Gone case if we’re ever run by the g**ndus.
many singaporean never learned history, its the government's fault.

so why have an army?
Fortunately the country is not run by gundus, and we may risk being overrun by the talents....
if we were runned by the idiotic, we will be overrunned by the fanatics, then we will really need to run... and you better start to run NOW, or you won't go far!!!!

It's half Malaysia's annual GDP and 1/4 of Indonesia's. That kind of economic boost + shipyards + mature manufacturing infrastructure is very valuable. As for wasting time in NS, ask for a transfer to a more... flexible unit. Lots of fun, assault boat, rapelling, heli-rapelling, airborne if you're CDO, combat survival (ultimate jia-zhua :P ), POW training, demo etc. If you end up in a zho-bo unit, then obviously you will zho-bo for 2 years.
we can buy mecanerices

I used to agree when I was little.
Now I know the GDP is not mine to defend at all. What the People own are, well, their own to defend or move out of the country, and what's left belongs not to the People but to the powers that be in this country. GDP is their exercise in vainglory. If they think I will stake my life defending their untold wealth and this megaproject which they are loath to give their own sons to defend, they're mistaken. I'm already half not Singaporean and soon I won't be.

if there is a war, there won't be any GDP to talk about, especially for a country like Singapore. There will always be a power at the top of any country, so if you don't like the power, and not enough people agree with you to change them, or we don't know a better way, you change your country. but in the end, what is the choice? is it about changing for the better, or "enough of this, anything else doesn't matter"?
GDP doesn't indicate the maturity of a country, it is the will of the people to live together, to make changes together, and together we defend our way of life. We make do with an unsatisfactory government and we accept some stupid oppositions like the SDP. No country is perfect.

Gurkhas are for a counter-coup role.
They cannot be in both army and police because they must be counterweights to each other.
Originally posted by weasel1962:Its an urban legend. 2,000 poorly armed gurkhas isn’t much anti-anything. The Gurkhas are unique in Singapore as they are police officers, not soldiers and little to distinguish between other cheap foreign workers. They guard key installations. That’s about it. They had a very good role quelling riots etc in the 50s/60s but those days are basically gone.
We have more problems with them nowadays esp over pay…plus the failures in the Mas Selamat detention.

Well, what key installations do they guard? We have two infantry battalions for guarding key industrial sites like refineries.
More often we see them standing under umbrellas with an MP5 outside a politician's house, or at the APEC summit. That's a counter-coup role.

You need to understand what specforce does before making such comments. Also Singapore already has its own specforce. No need foreigners to do the job. Thanks but no thanks.
It is possible actually to cut defence budget.SAF jus have to train more units of rangers.Stop money wasted on sar21 colors every season* and implement + diverse rest of funds in R/D.Throw all resources on creating densely highly concentrated combustable anthrax, chlorine, progene, cyanide, mustard etc. Built chemical warheads with capabilities to clusterbomb, multi ejection so as to spread over large areas upon detonation.Better if able to make chemicals to spread and kill over open areas without dissipating. For stealth missions, create backpacks to be carried by the rangers to stealth in and destory enemies.
Dont say im cruel ,evil, etc. One day you wake up to a war,saw ur fren got beheaded, you kenna kang ka-chng, while you are being force to watch helplessly in agony of ur mother/sis/daughter/wife tio gangrape. I believe you wun feel im evil after that, your be hellbent to torture them also. To kill or be kill. They will not show u mercy. Read up WW2 of the atrocities.

That won't save a lot of money. If you knew what's the breakdown of the Mindef budget, then you'd realise that components such as SAR-21 is only a very, very small component of the actual cost.
Even if one doesn't buy any SAR-21, its probably save like less than $10m in a $12b annual budget.
