Benefiting from improved ties with mainland China, the island's young men will have to spend shorter time in uniform beginning from early 2015, after parliament passed an amendment to the conscription law late on Tuesday, it said. 'We are gradually introducing a professional military, so there will be no holes in our defence capabilities,' said David Lo, the defence ministry's spokesman. Wah those in taiwan enlist before 2015 suay la.....but i think hor they should prolong singapore NS to 5 years....coz our young kids nowadays seem to like to stir trouble outside....3 more years of NS will instill more discipline in them...

for domestic affairs ,u do not need to call up kid soldiers with 2 years of ns.spore need regular soldiers or real policeman for that job.u already have gurkhas.

Its a strange topic. Why should Taiwan mind being part of China? A decade ago, Taiwan still thought they were entitled to rule the whole of China. Most Taiwanese saw themselves as chinese. 70 years ago, they were 1 country. To most ordinary people = no diff. That's their problem, not ours.
Now if Singaporeans don't mind having a foreign Government governing us, then sure, no need soldiers. In fact, no need to spend on defence. Some dumb *sses would even let Malaysia or Indonesia run Singapore.
Without NS, the Taiwanese can still maintain 215,000 soldiers. More important is that they have sufficient professionals for a deterrant air force and navy (as the PLA still needs to cross the straits of Taiwan >100km).
If no NS, how many professional soldiers in Singapore? 5,000? 20,000? Can the airforce/navy alone prevent an aggressor crossing 1-2km of causeway/2nd link? Has never happened in history. Didn't happen in WW2 with 85,000 soldiers defending Singapore. Some people need to think.
I do agree that NS has to keep up to date to be relevant.

NS should be reduced to 1 year or totally eradicated as in usa,uk,germany etc and other developed countriesonly countries that have more than 1 year ns but not more than 1.5 years would be countries that are technically still at war with neighbours as in israel and south korea.they were proven with battles ,reports,casualties of deaths of thousands of army and civilians on all sides.
but spore does not deserve the 2 years ns implemented it doesnt even need a 1 year ns even!!....it makes me wonder if the politicians in charge of military matters are.................in a state of psychosis or hypochondriacness or are simply taking advantage of peoples generosity to do ns.until they have a aggression by the neighbours perhaps only then should u recall all the reservists...but 2 years of wasting time is too much.

think polticians in military side are hypochondriac....always think enemies attacking them all the time and need lengthy ns and keep on harping about imperial japanese army..the yamato in spore and a bunch of indon commandoes who didnty like macdonalds hamburgers.:)
haiz...nowdays with robots n modern technology.....they can lessen everything and more when south east asia isnt that violent as arabia peninsula.

German army = 80,000 professionals but part of NATO. NATO= 28 European/North American countries incl US sharing defence.
Taiwan has the US TRA which mandates US to come to its defence in an invasion.
Singapore no NATO no military alliance. Singapore population only 3.2 million citizens (aging + new citizen). No NS = who want to be soldier?
No NS = no army. No army = who operate robot?
Will God, Allah protect Singapore with no soldiers?
Whilst I admire some people's faith, I don't have faith in man. The assumption that men in other countries will respect Singapore's sovereignty without a Singapore army to back it up is totally naive.

well spore shopuld pay for the men instead of expecting freebies from citizens who end up in low pay situations.in the us army the soldiers are all regulars...the reserves are the soldiers who were ex-regulars.
usa doesnt believe in enslaving own citizens except those that were trained as regulars in past where their skills are honed over 5 year contracts .No NS = full time regular army. regular army = operate robot
the rest of citizens will build n design the robots

NS period, too short = not effective, waste of time for army. Too long = economically disruptive, too much sacrifice for citizens. -

has any country attacked spore?and why cant u tone down the training?i am sure u have 1 million reservists..not enough???then u should build 10mil robots to compensate for lack of professional soldiers....try building some golden army instead....kids are not invincible..onkly humans.

I think a lot of people miss this sentence - that why they can shortener it to 4mths - as They are going for professional military like US, Europe .... !!!We too small to have military - so stop dreamming about shortening NS.

NS is a cheapskate way to protect the country. Why you want to pay more? That's why the Singapore defence budget is so small for an army of its size. That's also why NS is called a sacrifice for NSmen. And that's why its still relevant.

We Singaporeans serve on behalf of foreigners. We have the most pathetic, rotten deal of all.
