In WW2, SG was defended by Indians, Kiwis, Aussies, Brits, Malays and immigrant Chinese.

Interesting. Apparently there are more than 2,000 gurkhas in the police force (part of the 10,000 police force).
There's a gurkha guardhouse at oxley road :P

Gurkha are well known as good soldiers, but not so renown as an independent army.
The escape of Mas Selamat is proven to be a failure of the system. Even after the escape, he could hide in his sister's house, escape all the way to JB, it is not just the failure of some guards, or the detention camp, but the whole system.
It is not fair to put the embarassment on the Gurkha.

gurkhas new generation is not as tough as their counterparts in the old days. the gurkhas new generation is enjoying life, where got stamina and strength to run the mountains unlike the old gurkhas back then.

These gurkhas are an elite internal security counter-coup force. Just like many countries (Russia, Korea) have an elite army Capital Division.
They have no weapons for external defence.

We do need our own sporean to defend spore. Not foreigners.

Singapore can be like the French, recruit any nationality for a Foreign contingent under Singaporean commander.
Disregard any human rights rules, and whip them into a elite force, march or die kind, and send them out first into any conflict. After their term, they can collect their CPF and return to their homeland, or choose to be Singapore citizen and buy a HDB flat here.
I think the Banglas and PRCs would be keen.

Defence is like a public bridge, everyone wants to enjoy the benefits of the bridge, BUT no one wants to pay for the bridge except for a few honest people.
BUT why should someone else father, husband, brother, son and daugther put their lives on the line for the safety and security of your family?
shouldnt the safety and security of your family be your responsibility as a man, husband, son or brother of the family?
