  A light aircraft carrier is an aircraft carrier that is smaller than the standard carriers of a navy. The precise definition of the type varies by country; light carriers typically have a complement of aircraft only ½ to ⅔ the size of a full-sized or "fleet" carrier. In World War II, the United States Navy produced a number of light carriers by converting cruiser hulls. The Independence-class aircraft carriers, converted from Cleveland-class light cruisers, were unsatisfactory ships for aviation with their narrow, short decks and slender, high-sheer hulls; in virtually all respects the escort carriers were superior aviation vessels. In the post-war period, the British Royal Navy also operated a force of light aircraft carriers, all of which were born out of wartime designs. British-built light fleet carriers of the Colossus and Majestic classes were also sold to Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, India and The Netherlands.

  i thought those stealth frigates are a good substitute for carries?

  their apparent stealth makes it difficult for attackers to detect & destroy them

  on the other hand, they have advanced enemy detection capabilites which they can direct friendly forces to fire upon

  this kind of arragnement also makes detection of friendly forces harder by the enemies too

  Stealth frigates can be detected by radar, only their profile would be smaller on radar than it really is.

  Okay since we had just completed a thread on carriers....and you started this thread the least you could do is justify why it is time to have a light aircraft carriers? rather than explaining what is a light aircraft carriers....cause that is already mention in the thread.

  I am replying to Arapahoe's post. Having a light aircraft carrier is very beneficial to Singapore. Unlike a full-sized aircraft carrier, a light aircraft carrier is cheaper and is smaller and does not take up much space. The Thai Navy has light aircraft carrier which only costs $300 million. But a full-size aircraft carrier costs $1 billion at least. Also the need to stay militarily ahead of our neighbours Indonesia and Malaysia, is important. There are our constant threats, and having an light aircraft carrier will deter them from invading us by sea or air. The light aircraft carrier is much faster to deploy, even though it only carries half the amount of planes seen in a full-sized aircraft carrier it is not quantity that counts but efficency. Also instead of spending on a new carrier, a firgate can be converted into a light aircraft carrier. I hope this answers your question Arapahoe.

  Its definitely time for it. Our navy is only made up of frigates and submarines!!! A light aircraft carrier will complete the set. Oh wait, then we need a battleship! A light aircraft carrier is not a big ticket its a small ticket. A light aircraft carrier is the size of a frigate. So no big ticket, but medium or small ticket :)

  aiyah, just sell off all the ships in the navy and buy 1 Typhoon sub from Russia lor !

  if anyone attack us right, we'll just nuke every country in southeast asia to play safe !

  but the missiles are all land-based, the surfaced Typhoon is to make RSN look cool only lah !!!
