AA not so important in the Atlantic mah..............not like in the Pacific.........the only thing with German ships were that they're very heavy compared to Allied ships but had less firepower
Bismarck was disabled by Sword Fish torpedo bombers which cos her 2 be jumped on by e British fleet, from e point e torpedo hits she was as well sunk, it was just a matter of time cos e British can dump every ships she has if she have 2
i read that the Bismarck's AA guns hit the bombers but the shells went through the planes without exploding as the planes had too thin skins...........
if the Bismarck was as good a ship as the Iowa...................it would have escaped easily..........

Yamato looks very elegant except for the conning tower...............apart from that, very beautiful............
Yamato's my love........elegant's a very right word for it

yes, would have been the most beautiful ship if you don't count the conning tower.............
but frankly, Yamato wouldn't stand a chance against Iowa...........
Its really not fair to say which ship is better if they are of the similar class because the quality of the officers and crew make alot of difference on the performance of the ships

the reason why i say the Iowa would cream the Yamato is becoz............
1) Iowa's superior radar allows it to fire accurately at the Yamato from beyond the horizon, the Japs can't
2) the slower Yamato can't close in on the Iowa, the Japs can't shoot what they can't see and the Japs are famous for their shooting INaccuracy
3) Yamato's armour may be the thickest but it's brittle
4) the Yamato's 18'' shells have fuses that are set too long, they'll pass through a ship's hull without exploding within the ship
so actually, even the older US battleships like the South Dakota or Washington would have defeated the Yamato..............mostly due to their superior radar. the Yamato is incredibly hard to sink but she's quite useless in battle when the enemy ship is not fighting it at close range..............
My favourites....
British: Hood, Prince of Wales
US: Iowa, New Jersey
Japanese: Yamato, Musashi
German: Bismarck, Admiral Graf Spee
Come to think of it... all the ships in my list went kaput except for the American ships.
Actually, there was a chance for Iowa and New Jersey to face off with Yamato at Samar..... but then, Halsey ran off with them and left Taffy 3 to face Yamato.
Is Iowa's 16" turret operable now?
If I'm not mistaken, they did not repair it after that huge explosion and proceeded to decommission her.

Graf Spee my favourite.....................if the Iowas faced the Yamatos...............2-0 to the Americans.........
imagine if the Japs had built the planned Super Yamato class.................20'' guns...........guaranteed to blow you away..........LOL
and then the Germans with the H-class with 16.5'' guns..............or.................Hitler-spec with 20.5'' guns..............LOL
the US with their Montana class...............12 x 16'' guns..............
the French (?) class.................12 x 15'' guns.................
the British Lion class...............16 x 14'' guns...............
all fight at one go like wrestling's Royal Rumble...............LOL

In terms of tonnage, Taffy 3 < Yamato alone..... and yet Taffy 3 single-handedly chased away Yamato and her sister ships.
If only Task Force 34 (with its six battleships) had been detached to protect the Taffy groups, then it sure would have been one fantastic battleship action.

if those old US battleships had the same gunnery radar as the Iowa, 2 of them would be enough to do the Yamato in............provided they're armed with 16'' guns.................
they said the Yamato sank the Gambier Bay and 1 or 2 destroyers...............but i doubt it, unless the Yamato can see the Gambier Bay and the destroyers were sunk by Yamato's secondary guns..................those 18'' shells should have gone through the hulls of all the ships without exploding.............plus, the Japs are horrible at shooting !
