Ok for those who are into military stuff, one needs to know putting aside the armed divisions associated with Hitler Nazi Party , they are the best modern troops the world ever known.
They were the ideological and military shock troops of europe that mainly served as the best defense against stalin communist onslaught during WWII.Mainly serving as voluntary troops and surprisingly more than half of the 1 million of them are non german europeans fighting for a united europe.
It was on the front lines that the results of the SS physical training could really be noticed. An SS officer had the same rigorous training as the soldiers. Those officers and privates competed in the same sports events, and only the best man won, regardless of rank. This created a real brotherhood which literally energized the entire Waffen SS. Only the teamwork of free men, bonded by a higher ideal could unite Europe. Look at the Common Market of today. It is a failure. There is no unifying ideal. Everything is based on haggling over the price of tomatoes, steel, coal, or booze. Fruitful unions are based on something a little higher than that.
The relationship of equality and mutual respect between soldiers and officers was always present. Half of all division commanders were killed in action. Half! There is not an army in the world where this happened. The SS officer always led his troops to battle. SS soldiers were not sent to slaughter by behind-the-line officers, they followed their officers with passionate loyalty. Every SS commander knew and taught all his men, and often received unexpected answers.

Anyway Victors always write the final history...anyone of you know that the soviet troops raped germans after their capture of berlin in 1945.
The bottomline is in war no one is innocent

Next you're gonna say that we should train our soldiers in the mould of the Waffen-SS in order to successfully resist the onslaught of our alien overlords in 2012, rite?

SS divisional sized formations didn't exist at the start of the WW2. The thrust were made by regular army units until after operation babarossa.
It was only in late 42 and mid-43 that waffen SS divisions appeared. By which time, the major victories of the German army were already over.
Hitler was naturally concerned over the loyalty of the army and the SS, being originally his personal bodyguards, were thus given first priority on equipment in view of their loyalty. It should not be surprising that SS unit performance superceded regular army thereafter in view of the better equipment allocation.
As an example, the highest scoring tank ace was Kurt Knispel who wasn't in the SS.
The tone of the initial post however is disturbing as it goes beyond factual statements towards "hero worship". The SS did nothing worthy of military note that were not duplicated or even superceded by regular army except in the field of genocide (which the SS were certainly unparalleled).
