THE Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is getting into the fight in Afghanistan: It is planning to deploy a battlefield radar system that can detect enemy artillery, rocket and mortar launches and help direct counter-battery fire.
The move is aimed at helping coalition forces in the country deal with escalating insurgent attacks.
Thus far, the SAF's role has primarily been a supporting one - detachments deployed until now include a medical team and a construction team to build a health-service centre.
Announcing the deployment plan on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said that 'if considered useful', the radar system and troops to man it can be deployed for as long as nine to 12 months from the second half of this year.
i supposed there will be more info when they are ready to reveal. I am sure there are alot of detail dots to connect especially if we are only providing a specific function with no mortar or Howitzer battery.
Casualties come with the territory.
To minimize them, SAF troopers will have to put all their training & discipline into action at all times. I believe that the cab in ARTHUR vehicle is armored.
Also , SAF troopers have body armor.
However, I do not see any SAF having any small armored utility vehicles. They shud get some for our trooper in a war zone.
I have asked around in another forum about the usefulness of ARTHUR. Those have BTDT, felt it is of minimal use. The rockets are timer activated using a cheap watch. The culprits will be far away.
You have to find their body part if they go thru an iranian made IED.
