I wonder why SG poilticians are not using military rank as their official title for their name anymore? I remember a few years back, we used to address some NS politicians as Bgd Gen (NS) Lee Hsien Loong, Bgd Gen (NS) George Yeo or Rear Admiral (NS) Teo Chee Hean but recent years public media only refer them as Mr i.e. mister instead, rather than their rank, even as (Ret) if they have ROD or retired from service. Beside these 3 big names, who are the others serving minister/politicians still active in NS and what is their rank? Any idea?
It sounds so Junta mah. It is an effort by them to use softer terms to connect with the citizens.
They ROD le...
we do not have sufficient soldiers for that many generals
True, titles like BG Lee, BG Yeo or RAdm Teo sound so junta, so "Burma", so "Africa"... lol
So what is the reason? Because of image and perception or because they ROD?
Simple...their liabilities as reservists over....so the tltles also gone.....
They are retired from Op Ready Servicemen lah.
so simple.
correct... they ROD le. they're only allowed to use their military titles till they're 50. and since they all turned 50 a couple of years ago, they stopped using them.
soon-to-be minister lui tuck yew still uses his RAdm (NS) though. he's 47.
Wrong post.
Mentor General
But even if they have retired, I think they are still entitled to use their rank title with a bracket indicating they were retired from that last rank, as in Bgd Gen (rtd) or BG(r).

The answer is simple. You think wrong.
If the answer is simple and you think you are right, then what is the reason?

I will use your post to do that.

the "I think" part is wrong.
therefore ==>
they are not entitled to use their rank title with a bracket indicating they were retired from that last rank, as in Bgd Gen (rtd) or BG(r).
proof ==>
Lee hsien long and george yeo did not use their rank title with a bracket indicating they were retired from that last rank, as in Bgd Gen (rtd) or BG(r).
wa lao, retired still use....
BG (Ret.) (NS)
so long....
anyway no big deal to them can...

ya lor. MOney more important. to pay themselves world class salary is more important
i would give up any title eg. (Prof., Dr., BG) for that kind of pay... who needs those if you bring home millions?

Lol. What a funny reasoning from you to proof me wrong, but thanks for your effort anyway. This thread as in it's title is to find the answer, neither it's you or me to decide they are entitled or not unless you are posting for Sg mindef or if you can come out with some concrete proof of official regulation pertaining the use of title for militarymen during service and after retirement.

It is very common military titles are used by many retired military personnel/veterans worldwide especially Commonwealth countries, as prefix of their names with the condition they must show that they are in a retired status after the grade or rank; as in (Retired) or (Ret) or (Rtd) or just (R).
The question is why Sg poilticians are not using military rank as their official title for their name as in many other countries? Because of image and wrong perception it may caused to themselves, the government and also the country? Or because they are not entitled to use it under Sg military retirement law? Or they are just not proud of the title to address themselves as militari retirees? Lol.
i thought generals etc can serve longer?

So that during a military coup, the commanding general can exercise his power over the politicians. And by the way, young politician with NS liability not yet over, so in a military coup who to they answer to - the military or the constitution? LOL
