I used to go to Del Tone at St. Cloud.
I'm a member of, and shoot at, the Dakota County Gun Club in Rosemount for most of the year. The club's ranges are located outdoors and tend to become inaccessible in winter (at least to those who don't have 4WD vehicles!).
During the winter months, I normally shoot at a local indoor range.
When were you here in MN?
Wow ! nice Springfield Meia.. did a good job on taking those photo... good gun porn!! :)
I myself use a fully tune 1911 from Springfield.. I still like the series 70 type gun over the newer series 80 or 90 that COlt has!
Is that the original finish from springfield?? Looks good.
come to think of it! I need to go load up more .45 ... I am running out of ammo!

Hi, Dave! LTNS.
Yeah, I've always liked Springfield's line of 1911s. Even their less expensive entry level ones are built good enough to be used as a foundation for a "race-gun" build.
Sharp eyes on the finish! The frame still sports the original parkerized finish, but the slide was sent to Mac's Shootin' Irons Restoration a few years back for a refinish using GunKote as the original parkerization was starting to wear through. As a result, there's a small but noticeable difference in the finish between the slide and frame (as you've noticed in the images!).
What's your 45ACP handload recipe, by the way?
Meia: I'm loving it here. cept for the odd unpredictable weather. Yep, been to an outdoor range with a couple of friends who brought their array of guns. Bulgarian Ak-47, a 44 magnum, M1 carbine, M14, old Enfield .303, and my favorite: Mosin Nagant. While we were there, there were other shooters too. Tried out their guns too. Got my hands on the .44 Desert Eagle. Heck of a kick. Haha.
There was another "pistol rifle" (i don't know what its called). Single shot breech loading thingie that jarred my shoulder.
I'm bored right now because they have juz deployed to Afghanistan n Iraq. Doing airsoft skirmishing now tho to pass my weekends. =)
Meia, dave... the 3 of us must meet up someday... lol
thats what I thought Meia... those parkerizing on the Springfield isn;t the greatest coating. Anywya! good job on the finishing! did you do it yourself?? I have use the durcoat and have good luck with the finishing ! Excpet you have to prep your surface to get the best result.
Yeah! I use the Lee 1000 progressive! for my .45ACP! using Ranier 230grain TMJ bullets , winchester large pistol primers, 4.3 grain of Hogdon Universal Clays powder and OAL 1.200" Seems to be able to chrono 720 fps from my full size 1911A1 Springfield . I have not really play with other loadings except the 230 FMJ for the .45 ACP!
I am looking to get a 9mm setup for the 1911! My wife seems to prefer that over the CZ-75 that she is shooting now! seems too fat for her ! Am thinking about the Springfield EMP! Any comments on that>??
DaveC!
I was at St. Cloud 1998~2000 and left to work in Minneapolis before coming back to Spore in 2002. From what I know Iam the only one who goes to Del Tone range in winter on foot. 7mile hike each way from dorm to del tone.
I use to alternate with my Ruger 1022, AR-7, Modified SKA and Weatherby in 30-06 at the range.
Also went for pistol course conducted by Jim Hovda at the NRA coumpound.

MS,
Glad to hear you're having a blast over there, and getting some trigger time to boot! Have you gotten used to the weather yet?
If you thought the 44 Mag version of the DE had kick, you should try shooting the 50 AE version using commercial ammo. It's quite a revelation!
I would not mind getting together with Dave and you one of these days, provided we can get the logistics of such a meeting worked out. Perhaps we could meet at a regional gun show?

Dave,
Hey, what a coincidence! Those are the same components I use for my 45ACP handloads too. My recipe calls for a 230 gr. Rainier (or Berry's, whichever is on sale) RN TMJ atop 5.4 gr. of Universal Clays, for an OAL of 1.27" and lit off with a Winchester LP primer. My brass of choice is either Remington or S&B (I avoid Winchester and PMC brass like the plague as they are dimensionally extremely inconsistent). This load clocks about 820 fps out of the 5" barrel of my CZ 97B and is extremely accurate.
I am curious about one thing, though. You use 4.3 gr. of Universal Clays in your recipe--that seems a little on the light side. Hodgdon's load manual for Universal Clays and a 230 gr. projectile starts at 4.8 gr. and tops out at 5.6 gr. During my load development for 45ACP, I noticed that anything under about 5.0 gr would result in incomplete combustion and leave unburnt flakes of power in the gun and on the bench. Did you run into a similar problem?
YEah! the big Tulsa show or the Houston Reliant show is always good!
I guess great man think alike! My load is getting about 700 -730 fps on my springfield, I guess I time mine such that it does not give me accesive flip thus a faster follow up shot! I time that to my lighter load! Did have any problems with my 4.3 grain though! I will try your receipe and see if it runs better!

Darn thread cannot be monitored without me having to post some thing here. And I didnt want to, just want to read and use this for my personal blah blah blah *Laughs evil-ly. * (*Is there such a word?*)
I quite like the 1911 but I like the classic looking ones right down to wood grips, not yr flashy pachmayr stuff most of them seem to sport nowadays. Otherwise if its something modern I really do prefer the USP .45.

Wood grips certainly do enhance the aesthetic appeal of any all-metal pistol (especially a 1911!), but, in most cases, they're nowhere as durable, practical and ergonomic as a good set of synthetic grips. The ones you see on my 1911 are made by Hogue and feature a stippled rubber coating over a synthetic inlay with palmswells for added comfort.
I dont want to be reminded about grips. because the butts are mostly freaking bigger then my hands can close over.
But.....big guns do have that kinda errmmmm.......manly appeal. Its always nice when after it dances in my hands. Can still fire off shots in the direction or destination I wanted them to go.

I dunno im a 1911 purist. If I wanted synthetic grips, theres my awesome chunky USP .45...

Its not about the manly appeal. you know what they say, size compensates for something else. well i aint got one, so i need big guns to compensate XD
nah. actually its the purposefulness of the chunkiness thats strangely alluring and sexy.
are you gonna invest in a .50 cal or something too?
Point 5 caliber?
What for? To throw and kill a fella?

No... pull it out next to the big guy shooting the 9mm pistols.
Well, yah, the guy next door is most likely going to laugh himself to death when he sees us small asians flying off our stance the moment we fire it.
And as another asian boasted to me.....its not about the weapon, nor the bullets, its your finesse......
If I wanted a rocket launcher, I really should just get a rocket launcher.

Well, technically, the 50 AE and 500 S&W Magnum are "50 cal." rounds. Having fired both, I can attest that an Asian male of average stature should have little difficulty handling the recoil. The blinding muzzle flash and massive concussion of the muzzle report certainly convey the impression of overwhelming recoil to an observer, but the truth is the sheer heft of the guns launching the projectiles help in absorbing much of the recoil impulse.
You guys are lucky!
Last time fired a baretta point four five, it jarred me so much, that I had to lean back and use my hand and body as a tripod.
So many people was lecturing me about my body position, but I just cannot lean forward because the darn thing was so heavy! And I hate that it pushes me back at least half a step everytime I fire.
I would love a 50 cal. but screw the barrett. I want lots of hot lead downrange. M2 for me pls....
HI Guys!
Heres is a Colt Combat Elite I just got it in Christmas. Nice fit and finish and shoots well... Trigger defiently need some work to take up the creep. With the gun prices goin up the roof! its time to go back to classic.
