Adnan bin Saidi was a Muslim of Minangkabau descent who fought in the Battle of Pasir Panjang in 1942 in the defence of Singapore. His younger siblings, Ahmad and Amarullah Saidi, were soldiers as well. Ahmad was killed in action after his ship, the HMS Pelanduk was sunk by the Japanese enroute to Australia. Amarullah survived the war and currently resides in Kajang, Selangor.
Adnan was married toSophia Pakir, an Islamic religious teacher who died in 1949. They are survived by two sons and a daughter who died soon after birth. Their sons Mokhtar and Zainudin Adnan are known to now live in Seremban and Johore.

"....the Japanese soldiers came across the severely wounded body of Lieutenant Adnan and immediately recognized him as the “short berserker who had personally killed dozens of Japanese”. They beat him up, hung him feet-first from a tree and bayoneted him to death..."

He served in the 1st Infantry Brigade which later went on to become the Royal Malay Regiment of the current Malaysian army.
Kent Ridge Park,near the site of the battle, currently bears a commemoration plaque in memory of Leftenant Adnan Bin Saidi.
