ST recently reported on the frigate's test firing of the Aster SAM. It mentioned it had a range of 30km. I thought our frigates were equipped with Aster 15? Wonder if ST got their facts wrong again or whether RSN eventually decided to get Aster 30.
yes it is officaial.30 km!!
The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) stealth frigates are equipped with the Aster Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system, which has a range of up to 30km.

i like the control panels looks so simple.
wat are u jabbering about... everyone knows the aster 15 has the range of 30km for anti-air.
its a pity they didnt test fire the aster 30 at the same time... but given the range of 120 km... i can understand why.
how many minutes of reaction time does 30 click translated to? any idea?
E Aster 15 is so called becos its max range vs missiles is 15KM NOT becos its has a max range of 15KM , like they say its max range vs others airbone targets is 30KM
Likewise e Aster 30 max range vs missiles is 30KM but vs aircraft is 120KM
AShMs typically travel around 800-900km/h. They cover abt 15km in 1 min.
The Aster is quite maneuverable and ought to be able to keep up with any terminal pop up maneuvers, so even if its a bit shorter ranged, the chance of interception should also be quite high.
pity the weapon officer. Her/His eyes must stare at the screen when on duty.

so does this mean that we have the aster 30 also??
why would we buy a launcher that can launch the aster 30 if we dont intend to operate it?
but we must be SENSITIVE to our neighbour mah.... especially in view of their recent disaster at the generatl election.

do you see any change in their position vs Singapore due to the election?

Broadband sonar arrays require even more staring.

Um....weapon officer does not stare at the screen.
Neither does he take charge, haha.

If they need to rebuild their political base, they do not need any hostiity from any external source - especially not from Singapore who is needed to develop their dream Johor Iskandar Economic and Industrial Plans into reality.
Alternatively, if they decide to play the last card in bankrupting themselves, they could galvanise their own nationalistic position by going back to 'Old Politics' - by pushing the imagined military threat from Singapore to a higher xenophobic level.
There is of course the middle path - in which a stronger Singapore can assist them to cover their back - as with a stronger SAF partner in the existing FPDA defense arrangement, and free up their resources for more intense economic activities.

The best possible outcome. A Malaysia distracting itself through imagined external threats is a Malaysia not paying attention to more crucial domestic issues.
If Wikipedia is to believed, our frigates are armed with both Aster 15 and 30.
15 or 30 we wont know
Btw e missile system is fully auto ie once e ESM detect e radar emission of an incoming missile e aster will launch automatically cos human reaction is too slow, most of e time u only got a few sec 2 react before impact
lols.. i read from an magazine at the sg arishow this year tt....our frigate has aster 30
Hey Arball, which mag was that ? & which issue ?

not 2 secs lar... thats too fast le. From launch to impact, depends on distance. Lucky, you get a full 1-2 mins. Suay, less than 30 secs.

thanks
I c thanks
You don't rely on humans to mann the station. You program an automated system to do it. Which was the fucking problem with the Israeli warship when the morons shut the thing off because "it was making too much noise".
