Design a powerful anti-missile system for ships

Let's say you were given unlimited funding to design a ship that can be protected from missle attacks, how wil you build it?
A ship that can withstand a missle hit and stil keep going. -
Anti-ship missiles? Simple...i won't build a ship...i would build a sub. Because in the current Navy, there are 2 kinds of ships: (i) Targets and (ii) Submarines.

Put lasers along the sides of the ship and lots of it. Advantage of this would be that they can also act as anti-air as well as close in protection against boarders and sampans. And as long as your power source is still around, unlimited fire power.
