Malaysia to launch contest for airborne early warning fleet

Malaysia could issue a request for proposals for four airborne early warning and control system aircraft in mid-2008, with funds for the acquisition likely to become available during the nation's next five-year spending plan.
The Royal Malaysian Air Force has indicated a tentative requirement for a relatively lightweight, low-cost system to improve the situational awareness of its Boeing F/A-18D, RSK MiG-29N and Sukhoi Su-30MKM pilots. The surveillance aircraft should also be capable of monitoring naval vessels, it says, especially in the Malacca Straits.
Candidate systems will include Northrop Grumman's E-2 Hawkeye and Saab 2000 turboprops to be equipped with Saab Microwave Systems' Erieye radar. The Swedish company announced during the LIMA air show in Langkawi on 4-8 December that its proposal would have a loitering capability of at least 9h with five onboard operators.
Air force commander-in-chief Gen Azizan bin Ariffin says AEW&C aircraft "will be the next major acquisition after multirole fighters", but industry sources suggest Kuala Lumpur's immediate priority is to buy new utility helicopters to replace its Sikorsky S-61 Nuris (Flight International, 11-17 December).
Russia has offered to supply Kamov Ka-31 picket helicopters carrying Oko surveillance radars, but its Ilyushin Il-76-based A-50 has been deemed too large and expensive to take part.

Well the Malaysian can call for their RFP.
On 24/12/07 @ 1830hrs, whilst travelling along SLE towards AMK near to Lentor Ave, I saw an aircraft resembling the G550 CAEW taking off from a nearby AB. Distinctive was the twin jet engine located at the tail section and the v-shaped fin located on top of the tail-fin. There were boxy conformal parts attached to the outside of the fuselage.
Can anyone confirm my sighting? -
Malaysian AEW&C gonna be Erieye but im not sure whether is - SAAB 2000 or EMB-145 platform?
Numbers? Probably 2 a/c eventhough some said i could be as high as 6 a/c -
malaysia AEW??? wait long long lah.... by the time they do get it... i will be walking with a walking stick....

RMAF wants 6 AEW & C!!!. You must be joking. Use what to pay? Palm oil or Proton cars? Finance not enough money lah.
Maybe RSAF can refurbish and sell them our Hawkeyes 2nd hand at a good price. Barter trade also can because RSAF can resell the palm oil to the local biofuel companies rather then strip down the Hawkeyes and sell as scrapes which will fetch lower prices. If we are going to get rid of old equipment, might as well make some money from it.
We are always accused of being uncompassionate, greedy, and selfish. So be it. -

Yes, thats true since our relations with Indonesia under the new President who is an ex general is improving. And there is already a small number of SM1 in service. I mean i don't think we will melt down all of the SM1s. Wonder if Philippines want some of our SM1? They have been operating some very old and outdated equipment in insufficient numbers against the muslim separatists and communists. -
