I know this is "military" nuts but just an observation...
sometime ago.. i remembered that the police special operation forces are issued the "red" beret....
and then when I am back in sgp in May-07 I actually see policemen with MP5s in Orchard road with blood red beret instead of the standard policy dark blue beret....
this time when i came back to sgp in Oct-07, i was at changi airport and I see the some policemen in MP5 standing guard, and they seem to be wearing a maroon or very very dark redish beret...
have they changed the colour of the beret?? If they do, i think it is a good move... i personally find the blood red beret to be too "striking"... kind of like saying... "shoot me"... and is a overly visible target... even in a urban setting... -
They should all just bloody wear helmets lah...bugger...Ghurkhas also wear Khaki beret now.WTF.

Which meant support but aint POI frm 6SIR and hence shld be green? -

IIRC, the police red beret is for one of their more specialised counter-terror/POI or something teams. They were in the mobile display for this years NDP. The choice of the colour red is pretty weird though because it is usually reserved for airborne forces. Yep the gurkhas have khaki berets. Not sure whether that is specific to the singapore battalion or whether its from the british.

and i think the police SOC (or what ever they wish to call themselves) are just a bunch of wannabes
like some one mentioned the red or maroon berets are traditionally donned by elite Airborne Paratroopers...i know of some CDOs who were pissed when they found out that the cops were 'adopting' the red beret also...makes all their blood and sweat they shed seem worthless... -
saw those at city hall also .... cluster farking together, standing around with bored face ....
they looked pretty harmless .... -

Red can be worn by any unit deemed to be elite. Technically, even Coast Guards' STS, Prison's SPEAR and RSN's NDU can wear red berets since they are the elite of their own organisation. No one said that red beret is for army only.
Anyway, if you are elite you are elite. No need for a red beret to show it, nor is there a need to get all worked up 'cos another elite unit is also wearing red. -

The purpose was to make themselves more visible, not invisible. Army need to be invisible to make attacks while not be attacked... Police need to be visible to project security, give everyone peace of mind and deter any criminals... -

They are known as ventures. And the beret is different from the army one. Army one more soft and bigger. Ventures are from age 16-if im not wrong 19. And venture beret is buy from scout shop.Please respect them as it takes a lot of skill to be one,but a lot depends on the troop.
