SG Navy to go for a 6 fleet submarine force

  SG navy will be maintaining a 6 fleet Submarine force, 2 Ocean going ( Vastergotland with AIP) and 4 Coastal ( 4 Sjoormen ). The Challenger Class will be due for replacement by 2015 with the SG navy closing monitoring DCN and HDW on their range of future submarines ( coastal ).

  Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has signed an agreement with Kockums for the supply of two Västergötland class submarines to the RSN on 4 November 2005. Currently in reserve with the Swedish Navy, the submarines will be transferred to the RSN on completion of the modernisation and conversion for operation in tropical waters. The submarines are expected to enter service from 2010 and will replace some of the Challenger class submarines. It is believed that the Challenger class were purchased to develop the required submarine operations expertise before selecting a modern class of submarines to replace them, since all the boats are over 25 years old.

  Its swedish, from Sweden. Anyway Kockums has been bought over by HDW of Germany, the makers of U1212/214 and the proven 209 series. HDW inturn has American shareholders vested Interest.

  Well the USN called their submarines, 'boats'...and those are nuclear submarines...i am not sure about ours which are very much smaller...
  
  If i am not wrong the Soviets/Russian referred to their vessels as 'He' instead of the more widely used 'She'. I think they and the PLAN called their subs 'ships'

  A submarine is never refer 2 as ships but boat cos calling a ship submerging is considered bad oman

  Makes sense to work with the Swedes since we already have ties. Next up, Swedish Visby class stealth missile corvettes. LOL!

  Typically submarines are called "boats"... even those Typhoon class SSBNs are called "boats"....

  It was a deal in the 1990s. A package that involved training the future RSN submariners as well as the Sjoormen submarines.
  
  The deal actually included the 2 Vastergotland class subs shortly after that but this was not widely known.
