ST Kinetics Compact Personal Weapon (CPW) is a cost effective, lightweight and compact weapon with very low recoil. But back to the weapon...
I have often wondered why STK has not produce a SMG for so long.
And then, the first, unannounced effort came in the form of the kinetic part of the SSW (Section Support Weapon) in 5.7mm.
But the SSW is kind of still a WIP. So maybe they decided to take the 5.7mm portion and develop it into a standalone " CPW " (why not PDW? why not SMG?).
The website didn't say what calibre but my bet is that it comes in 5.7mm.
Why?
Because 9mm or other sub calibres have never been very popular with STK. and business-wise, they probably figured that the global market is over-flowing with 9mm weapons already. So since they have a license from FN to fool around with the 5.7mm calibre, they're putting it to good use.

Concerning the weapon itself, it looks very " Robocop " and quite reminiscent of HK MP7, but at probably half the price.
(And also, in the PDW calibre, HK's 4.6mm seem to be losing ground to FN's 5.7mm.)
The only advantage of this weapon layout of magazine in pistol grip is that it allows for putting into a leg or hip holster.
For police this looks less aggressive and for army, this frees both hands for doing other stuff.
Just my personal opinion. -

The gun looks similar to the Claridge Hi-Tec pistol, though. I nearly bought one of them from a firearms liquidator in Texas a few years ago, but I waited too long and they sold out. -
I think it is bcos the current market is saturated with established SMG designs, so it is unwise to fight with the big players like H&K. The ST webbe claims this weapon is gonna replace police/army armaments, huh?? why?
Another thing is weapons like this with magazines placed in the pistol grip, how stable are they in operations?
I think this weapon is suitable for those non frontline combatants, like clerks, storeman, mechanics, maybe even the 2PDF. Just like how the Russian used their PPSHM during WW2 -

The PDW or CPW or whatever is always a bit of a white elephant.
Not many armies have the money to equip their clerks and storemen with expensive little new toys that also use a different calibres.
Most armies just give their non-combatants old ARs. They don't even get carbines as thse are usually reserved for special combat troops.
The simple logic being that since a clerk's job is to type, the money should be used to buy him a laptop, not a expensive little weapon that he's not gonna use anyway.
The SAF, for example, bought FN P90 - a PDW - for SOF.
And the PPSh is actually frontline issue. Some entire battalions are armed with nothing but PPsh.

My problem with most SMG or PDW or CPW is that, they are almost as bulky as a carbine, though shorter. Nut they fire a short range round that is also less lethal. For army officers of a very senior rank un the field, would you want to have such a heavy load strapped to you at all times? Better to stick to pistol with a carbine on standby.
In military this looks more suitable for certain kinds of special ops.

For normal police patrol, this is overkill. The PC will get body ache with this thing strapped to the leg for whole day.
Maybe for show of force like installation patrols, Reserve Units and SWAT etc. -

In fact, Mindef has not even said anything about absorbing this weapon, so why bother criticising it?
SAF troops, will be equipped with Sar-21 or M-16s even at HQ. I've not seen any other weapons beside the occasional gimpy at my old HQ. -

Very stable, I'd imagine. Having the weight of a loaded magazine in the pistol grip helps keep the weapon's center of mass closer to where the shooter is holding the weapon with his strong hand. Just that until a more credible source like Mindef, says or propose they want to adopt the PDW for clerks and storemen, there isn't much opinions to give. -
PDW were originally intended for non-combat troops like clerks and storemen. So equlus84 is actually correct.

Something to get potential customers interested but not revealing much. If the customer is interested they can ask for a demo. -

A lot of clerks are not trained to handle firearms as most of them are Pes E. Only those Pes C may recieve firearms training depending on medical excuse. Ditto for Storemen.
Most of these Clerks and storemen head for their logistic or administrative training schools straight out of BMT. There they learn tools of their trade, which does not include PDW handling. Any firearms they'd have learnt to handle, would be learnt in BMT. And that would limit it to the M-16 or in the future, SAR-21. -
