I know ours is the "SG" but if the japanese thinks highly of the F15 then they could have ordered "a new line" F15 with latest upgrade ..instead of eyeing F-22 and now thinking to build their own. I'm afraid they somehow know that F15 is no match to Su-30 (according to that india su-30 vs F15 result?) that china is having. An effective air force is more than just standalone planes and Janes' specs.
It's about integration in joint warfighting doctrine, maintanence and interoperatibility with allied forces.
Japan can afford to pay for the F-22, why would they stand still. Why did we move on to the Eagles and F-35s instead of sticking with more F-16s? Because we can do more today with lesser amounts of replacement aircraft due to their advanced nature.
The JASDF is not a very large force structure, and if they can get a force multiplier, why not. The Aussies are keen on the F-22s, because they need a 2-for-1 replacement of the F-111s and extra F-18s for medium strike roles.
As for us, the F-15SGs are probably destined to be replacement bomb trucks and deep strike aircraft, not fighters. -

How does China's role in the Vietnam war in anyway illustrate China's threat to SEA? Vietnam war and Korean war were clashes of ideologies that divided the world after WW2. Vietnam, Korea, AND China were divided into two and war of unification ensued, with the backing of their respective camps. It was american's domino theory that suggested that SEA would fall once vietnam falls. And even if that were true, SEA would fall under communism, not Chinese! Now Vietnam defeated the american, is Vietnam under Chinese rule now?
Did you read why China invaded Vietnam? after the defeat of the american, vietnamese were expanding westward by attacking the khmer inside Cambodia, it was then Deng Xiao Peng decided to teach Vietnam a lesson by invading into Vietnam. they pulled out later, nobody won, nobody lost. How could we view that incident as China's threat to vietnam?

China had very different and urgent reasons of her own to attack Vietnam.
Cambodia's Pol Pot was a China ally that Vietnam had just invaded and deposed.
Vietnam was very coc.ky after winning the war with US - ironically with China's aid - but was moving into the Soviet camp.
So China was squashed between the (then) hostile Russians in the north and Vietnam in the south. So China decided to whack the dog (Vietnam) to show the owner (Russia) that China is not gonna take encirclement lying down.
Inspite of heavy PLA casualties, China actually achieved all her military and political goals with that war. Of course, with the west "body count" mentality they insist to this day that China lost.
Not only did Vietnam soon pulled out of Cambodia, it also went easy on the Vietnam/Russia anti-China collboration. All were China's political aims. Militarily was less rosy but theyy did invade many km into North Vietnam territories. -

after the war... the presence of huge number of chinese troops across vietnamese borders forced the viets to divert large number of their forces from the thai front... effectively changeing the entire strategic balance in ASEAN favour...
frankly... had it not been PRC... thailand would almost certainly fall.... lets not even try to think about malaysia and their all powerful magic kris... against the viets AK-47

Secondly, did China step foot into South East Asia, Vietnam? Yes. Was it an invasion? Yes. Of course, its a "retaliation." So I guess you can call them Liberators of Cambodia.
So lets throw in more recent history. Vietnamese Gunboats that were sunk off the spratlys. In the period between 1974, and 1999, out of 13 known military clashes around the isles, China was involved in 9 of them.
Are they a threat to South East Asia? -

With the majority of the military clashes involving China, sinking of vietnamese gunboats, I don't see how any ASEAN nation not consider this to be a security matter of great importance.
I'm not saying that China is hell bent on projecting its military prowess to cower us into submission. In fact, I feel that China has gone quite the opposite in positive diplomatic engagements with ASEAN. However, with its last shot in anger fired less than 2 decades ago, its wise to remain vigilant. -

Fact of the matter is, China is a security challenge, it is also an economic challenge for ASEAN. There's need for both deterrence and cooperation in facing the security challenges it poses, and to prevent Chinese Dominance in our region.
ASEAN has to constantly to engage US, Japan and even Europe to counter the effect of the China's rise, and prevent the hegemony of any one power. -

actually if there is an aerial attack, we SAF soldiers just use our finger like a gun and shout bang, causing the enemy plane to crash and die.
