How would our army stand up to the Fight ?

There is a very famous picture (of Cam Ranh bay) taken by a BlackBird during the 1980s and it clearly showed x numbers of Bears on the tarmac.Originally posted by Arapahoe:Cold War Period the Bear station in Da Nang.
One of my sec school teachers was one of those that "patrolled" with the Thai troops. There were incidents where they were contacted by "unknowns" and got engaged in a heavy firefight. (The Thais...) My teacher, then a Commando, were instructed to stay back. The only piece of action they got was retrieving, and bagging the various body parts in the aftermath.Originally posted by OldBird69:I recall reading in Straits Times (in mid-1980's) Mindef revealed several flights of Soviet civilian airline, Aeroflot, had veered off course while on approach to Paya Lebar (then our civilian Int'l airport) and near Sembawang Airbase, possibly to spy on it or test our response time in scrambling F-5's.
Also read a report in Janes Defence (from then) that Vietnam, which was then an enemy of Asean as they had invaded Cambodia, had raised questions about the size of our full (incl. all reservists) military strength, saying it was a threat to them. Reservist friends of mine told me they were sent to the Thai border for military exercises during call-up at that time.
I'd say the threat of a Soviet-supported Vietnamese invasion was real in that era. I think Asean had China (they supported the Khmer Rouge, which were fighting the Vietnamese) on our side, so Vietnam had to consider an enemy attacking from the north if they moved southward.
i thought back in high school i read that once they take off it will only take less than 2 hours to be within range to SG.Originally posted by Black Aces:There is a very famous picture (of Cam Ranh bay) taken by a BlackBird during the 1980s and it clearly showed x numbers of Bears on the tarmac.
I won't take the then-Soviet military presence (at Danang & Cam Ranh Bay) as a direct/indirect military Soviet 'apression' in this region but more as a Soviet counterweight to the US bases (of Clarke AB & Subic Naval Base) in the Philippines in SEA.
But then, I'm not a proponent of the argument that the Soviets will not take up the offer at this 2 ex-US bases IF the US is already not at the Philippines but rather the easy argument that 'hey, if you're, I'm here too'.
There is this book written by ex-Soviet Military personnel where is discussed on the 'Soviet Military agression in the world in the Cold War' very interesting read as in a chapter it depicts the experiences of Soviet SAM detachment personnel during the Vietnam War and their opinion of the War and their opinion of their N.Vietnamese troop calibre.
