Anyway, to answer SGF why some NS unit still havnt convert to SAR21.
SAR21 conversion for NS man is a quick 1/3? day course. However, the decision for the conversion is often made by the active brigade/ administrative in charge. If the NS brigade officer (reg / ns) decides to shelf the idea for whatever reason then the NS Bns dont convert.
Reasons can be anything from their reservist schedule no time, they are going to ROD in 1-2 years, their unit is low priority, because must book the shooting range but it's full ,never indent ammo, stuff like this and that and cropups. Thus some NS unit never convert.
All those in my unit converted already even though by now most of them has ROD. Not to mention some people got transferred into a already converted unit and thus those rarely undergo conversion.
Regarding the A4, i have only one thing to say. The "In" thing is modular armour. Snap it on and it's good to go. Otherwise dont raise too many eyebrows and dont waste diesel. Hehe.
no need covert one. A4 good enough for preening during national day parade. if still want to convert, go for A8 or whatever. A6 will be yesterday's news by the time u finished reading this. LOL.
Leo 2 not for show during National Day. It needs to be effective when needed - & I hope that day never comes.
Most Leo 2 A4 users already upgrading or upgraded to armor of at least A5 standard for good reason & although latest armor can still be defeated by latest ATGMs, ensuring that our Leo 2 is sufficiently protected against the newer & nowwider range of AT weapons is necessary. It forces opposition to field larger number of more expensive AT weapons. Ultimately, the upgraded armor will have to work in tandem with active protection systems when these become more reliable, cheaper & more effective.
Yes, our Leopards are not for NDP parades...if it is meant to be so we would have bought something brand new and of the latest model with the latest gadetry with the highest prices . Now that will make a respectable parade piece.
I believe that with our reasonably capable armour technology, we might just want to upgrade the A4 using our own technology.
This is because the conditions and scenarios which we are facing is vastly different from when the A4 is 1st commissioned in Europe. For example i am quite sure that we are the 1st Asian country in the tropical rainforest climate to operate this tank. And we are certainly not facing hordes of Russian tanks in waves like in Europe during the Cold War.
Secondly, it is a tradition for the SAF to buy something 2nd hand to to upgrade it with our capabilitie while cooperating with others slater. Examples are the A4 Skyhawk, AMX-13, Challenger subs etc
There are many valid reasons for upgrading our weapons in-house and domestically. Let me give a reason here.
During the the Falkland conflicts in the 80's, the Argentine Airforce sank HMS Sheffield, one of the most advanced warship of her time in the Royal Navy fleet, with an Exocet anti-ship missile. It was deemed a major threat that the fleet has no immediate counter-measure against.
Fortunately for the British navy, the Argentine has very limited stock of Exocet missiles AND the British military attache of the British Embassy in Paris convinced the French government to surrender the entire blue-print and technical details of the Exocet missile to the British defence scientists for critical study. Hence, the British navy was able to implement effective counter-measures that defeated the Exocet threat to their shippings around Falkland group of islands. The Argentine paid millions of dollars for these missiles that eventually lost their effectiveness overnight.
Imagine if we are to be "sold out" by our arms supplier(s) and we did not "customize" our weapons.
I believe that with our reasonably capable armour technology, we might just want to upgrade the A4 using our own technology.
how very true. But tankee, would it be excessive to have these shown in public or will we forever be doomed(haha) to see a moving box on track and wheels; albiet with a gun? The platform has already been disclosed unlike the Tempest. More armour is just better protection for the crew.
I wonder if Mindef knows the love attached to platforms such as the Formidable frigates, F-15SGs, Bionixes, etc. Like it or not, they have become a source of pride and love for many Singaporeans and are definite morale boosters. Just took a taxi ride the other day from the air-port. We(a taxi driver and me) happened to be talking about NS and he extolled the capabilities of our FH-2000 arty pieces, new stealth frigates, etc in his limited understanding. Needless to say, he is very proud and confident about the capabilities of the SAF.
Show a bit more=No harm right=More love and better morale
japanese new tank
looks good. the chassis closely resembles leopard. except for the headlamps and the front slope. i wonder what composite armour they use?:)
looks like it has teh hunter killer system as well. turret armour looks good too. could this be the ultimate tank??=)
Note the sloped type armor for the Jap tank.
Most the latest tank armors including for Leo 2 A5, A6, Merkava 4 have new gen armor. Older gen like on Leo2 A4 are slab faced .
for comparison Korean new XK2
The Jap one looks like a Leclerc/Merkava while the Korean one looks like a Leclerc/Abrams
