Jane's Defense Issue 31 - 1 August 2007 reported ''Dutch defence ministry plans selling spree''.
Singapore can stand to benefit from this Dutch effort to raise revenue to balance their operating budget to maintain their military presence in Afghanistan, Bosnia, and the Carribean.
The selling spree include :
18 F16 A/B from a fleet of 90,
12 of its 36 brand-new Krauss-Maffel Wegmann PzH 2000 self-propelled 155mm howitzers,
some 28 Leopard 2A6 MBTs from a fleet of 88. -

With regards to what we can actually purchase from the Dutch i would say there's actually very little.
Their F-16s are different in version AND setup.
We do not have tactical use of 12 Pzh2000 when we can just build and train even more units of Primus.(no need more regular to go first learn how to use those)
Dutch L2A6 may mean we have to strip down certain upgrades to A4 then reupgrade to our Singapore L2AX standard. Besides, i think the German Army still have some more for us to buy as real assets, training and "spares"

I agree with CM06, I think the L2A6 is a good upgrade but may not suit Singapore's needs. I think we should get more A4 to be upgraded to other Singapore models in the future, for example we can convert a heavy IFV from the chasis of the L2A4 like what the Israelis did to their T-54/T-55 and Merkava MK1s.Originally posted by CM06:Welcome Atobe to Milnuts. Somehow the recent issues at the Political Forum seems to be less stimulating, and find my regular visits to the Milnuts for updates to be more interesting lately. You are certainly correct with your views of incorporating the Dutch hardware into the SAF.
Although the quantities maybe small - if the price is right, and putting the obsolete F-16 A/B types out of consideration, the SAF can find some use for the other two land equipment to fit into the Orbat, or for some DSTA-SAF study to improve our indigeneous military design and engineering.
DSTA and SAF have quite an assortment of equipment that they test with, before coming up with newer locally developed equivalent custom built for the SAF. -
The 2A6's main gun barrel may be a barrier to operation in our dense jungle conditions.

With regards to the F-16s most likely Chile?(i think) might pick up the slack since they did purchase the previous F-16s from the Dutch.
Regards to "local" produced items. we have plenty of collaboration with you know who. More funds = more chance of something good coming up. If we are building our own aircrafts then i would say buying those planes to strip down and play around would be a worthwhile venture.
As to our A4 with problems in the forest terrain, we go looking for Armour's best friend...without them, Armour ops will be at best half baked. The mighty capable and reliable Armoured Engineers units. Hehe. Where there was no road, there is now a highway! -

Yeah, the A6 barrels are a tad bit too long. Even if we do not acquire the A6's for operational usage, getting some for spares as well as to study the spaced armor is useful as well.
As for the F-16A/Bs from the dutch, err, I doubt so even if they are the MLUs. We just got rid of our F-16A/Bs, i doubt we'd get some more.
I doubt SG will gain a lot from the Dutch garage sale. At best a couple of A6s. F-16s, no-no. IIRC, the dutch are not allowed to export the weapons that their F-16s operate as well. -
IMO, Singapore will definitely upgrade its 2A4 into 2A6 or Higher "2A6SG"
honestly i wont be surprising seeing a few 2A6 when the last Leopard 2 is being delivered. -
Unlikely, A5 maybe or even more likely is Leo2SG

Well, if we are to maintain it for 30 years or more like what TCH says, then confirm it will be upgraded liao. But what variant ? Highly likely Singapore one me think and the equivalent of the A5 at least if not the A6. just my 2 cents
Has there been a change in thinking with respect to operating MBTs ? Cant remember everything but it seems that the gravepine(from reading the reports/comments available on the net which are not usually right) has it that the MBT is necessary in modern warfare. As opposed to Gen Shinseki`s idea of having smaller and faster equipment and hence, a smaller or light tank ?
Especially in urban fights. If so, we may see our MBTs configured more along those lines. More armour, etc.

But please, put on some of the wedge shaped armour. They are really cool. For some reason, tanks are the mercedes bezn of armoured vehicles. So, lets decorate erm -
I think if the current armour is adequate protection, I dun think there's a need to lunk another few tons onto the tank and make it guzzle more precious fuel in the case of a "lightning strike".
