Wierd thing is, MINDEF website never mentioned HIMARS nor was it featured on the news. Also, wikipedia doesn't have the update.
Shortly after Leo 2 was mentioned in the papers, it popped up every where. I'm wondering if perhaps Boey jumped the gun & published the article too fast. Even TODAY paper didn't mention HIMARS. -
I guess there there are things they want to talk about and what not and some things they won`t.
At any rate, it was a proposed sale at that time though when it comes out in that form from the Us government, you can take it as a reality.

Why? You can launch an equivalent sized missile from a patrol boat. The
Israelis have even developed a marine launcher for naval ships.
There are many possibilities for usages. -
is it like possible to mount the HIMARS system on a navy fast craft and then launch the missiles from there ?

Not sure abt XM31 though, but it is simply too short range for sea-launched when you considered the adversary LR coastal arty.
At least 150km range should be better, ATACM, EXTRA and LORA all fit the bill. -

As for GPS guide rds, XM31 has been used quite a bit recently in Iraq by the US and Afganistan by the Brits and now XM31 unitary GPS guided rocket is now dubbed as 60 or 70km Sniper.
Do a google search for "60km Sniper" or "70km Sniper", you will find lot of hits with reference to operations in Iraq and Afganistan -

Himars while still a system under "testing" with low-rate production, it's concept is -not- new.
It may be a "new" system but it's concept of rocket artillery has been around for ages and used for ages. The concept of -guided- artelliry rockets is a new form of long range assault for ground forces that's more than in line with the long esthablished guided air dropped/air to surface/surface to surface munitions. Hence you cant really say it's a "new" system.
Guided rockets means the seperation of missile/rockets have narrowed but cost and usage purpose being rather different. (Missiles are still considered to be more manoveurable and faster though) -

But there are 2 problems:
1) MAF indeed has a small dick as compare to SAF, that's a fact , we can't change the fact!!!

As I posted a quote by a Russian scientist that unguided rocket at above 40km become ineffective, so at short range with DPICM , it is still useful but at longer range, the dispersion is so wide that you will not know whether it will hit the target at all, even for an area target.
At the time when MY bought A II, I said at the time that it is smart for SAF to wait as the new trend for MLRS is guided rocket, becos at that time , US was developing GPS guided GMLRS and ATACM.
So I have being proven right, as GPS guided GMLRS has being very effective in Iraq and Afganistan, in fact US army is now not buying any more unguided M26 and even no DPICM rocket in the future becos of high dud rate of DPICM rds.
There is a movement in Europe now to have cluster munition like DPICM to be banned like AP mines, whatever happen in the future, it will not greatly affect HIMARS as it has GPS guided unitary rds. -

Lastly, for Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) role, it is unlike the land based system, for land based system , we are only risking the launchers and it's crew.

That's why it is good that for NSFS system to have good standoff distance against enemy coastal arty. -

now, for a precision weapon system like HIMARS which u claim can land its rockets within 5 metre of a pin point at its stated range of 70 kilometres, why worry if u can keep on 'sniping' whilst at the same time see the opponents counter artillery had a good aim but see their rounds fell everywhere but the target.
BTW, have u considered that guided weapon systems are good as long as its guidence remain intact? a bad weather and all of a sudden ur GPS go bonkers. u may see ur rockets exploded in bintan instead of batam... -
