Apparently it has a range of 400km and can target ballistic missles and 'stealth' jets.
Its too large to look good but if it works...MOSCOW, July 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has successfully conducted the first live firing tests of its new S-400 Triumf air defense complex at a testing ground in southern Russia, the Air Force said Friday.

A basic firing exercise was conducted July 12-13 at the Kapustin Yar firing range in the Astrakhan Region by an air defense regiment that will soon assume combat duty outside the Russian capital.
"The exercise was a success," the Air Force press service said in a statement. "The system destroyed all designated targets."
The S-400 (NATO codename SA-21 Growler) is a new air defense missile system developed by the Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family.
It has been designed to intercept and destroy airborne targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles), or twice the range of the U.S. MIM-104 Patriot, and 2.5 times that of the S-300PMU-2. ... -
Great for Singapore's TMD, because the range is so big that it is unlikely that the remains of the intercepted missile(s) will land in Singapore.

Why not just nuke the enemy before they can fire anything. That's like the best defence.

This is an upgrade over the S-300 missiles. Hence, if we are to opt for Russian goods, it might no longer be the S-300 system but the S-400 system. Looks good.

The Greek/Hellenic air defence system uses a mix of Russian and Western systems. We do too in a little way with the Iglas

Frankly, i dont think IGLAs are that impressive. I saw the video...so so lor it's a MANPAD missile afterall.
I mean, i do rely on it to protect my head here.... but from what i see..it's really more aimed at choppers and slower low flying aircrafts.
I think it's more for psychological assurance and the last last last line of defence. If the iglas have to work, the aircraft (lets say a modern Fighter/bomber like erm*cough* asyou-dirty am kay am) would have made it past our whole network of stuff.....prepare to have casualties.
On the other hand, the Iglas will be a big surprise against any Attack Helicopters that are not paying attention / lack HARM ability when caught.
One more thing, i -dont think- we will be the first to actually declare we are bringing in ATBMs...probably we *cough* volunteer to set up a US radar and manned by US Patriots. Hehe. No bad idea either. Then we will conduct friendly "exchange" then blah blah blah. -
Well, we already sounded out to the world last year about future purchase of ballistic missile defenses..
I remember that we bought an unnamed qty of Crotales too.. -
Last I checked, the S-400 is not for sale.
S-400s are operational over Moscow already too. -

The Russians have no qualms about selling away their latest technologies! 400km range, and if its as good as the mythical S-300, its definitely worth considering. Friggin SA-10s are tough nuts to crack! -
There are strategic reasons why we should acquire Russian weaponry. One of them is to deny the possibility of our neighbours from doing the same. Not that they have the cash currently but it is still a strategic out-come we ought to seek to have. It is very unlikely they would buy a system we have and the ability to manipulate for our own needs.
We can mix and match them with western ones. -
The reality check is within SEA no one acquires or is acquiring a SAM system with range over 50kms, a mysterious range spell so far no major regional power dares to break.
I donÂ’t expect SG to break the status quo either. -
If you are going to shoot down stray ballistic missiles coming from North Korea, I believe the range would be in excess of 50km. Moreover, the range of newer medium range surface to air missiles already equals or exceed our current 40 km I-hawks; Meads, S-300s, Aster 30s,etc.
We were using the 80-120km Bloodhounds till the 1990s. Obviously, we did not find a replacement necessary then. It might be different now with the Indons and others poised to purchase 200-300km range supersonic missiles. -
Look no further, just across the causeway, where the army force there is currently busy looking for a NG SAM system. Aster30 did attend the tender but failed to be shortlisted. Nevertheless, the left finalists all have a range no more than 50kms spell, then there was news RMN also is looking at possible ESSM acquisition, a ship theater defending missile boosting a range without exclusively, 50kms.
How about other tradition major power? Indonesia & Thailand are not in the news for NG SAMs acquisition, so does the SAF, still comfortably with I-Hawk, with regard to the current situation. Elsewhere, Vietnam & Myanmar are usually not in the orbit of influence.
ThereÂ’re many potent NG SAMs systems worldwide, IMO, and price should not be an issue for SEA countries to procure such advanced, long range SAMs, considering how cheap those systems compared to also potent fighter jets now flying everywhere in the same region, Politicians just want to a good excuse to take the 1st step.

I disagree. The precedent of having a long range surface to air missile system has already been set by Singapore; via the bloodhounds.
Edit: To the contrary these systems are fairly expensive to purchase. I recall a few batteries of Patriot missiles can cost > USD 1-2 billion. And there are not `many' potent new jets flying around in SEA. If these systems are so cheap, you would see them sprouting all around the world. And you would still need to integrate them into your defence systems which would take more time and money.
I seriously doubt the ability of neighbouring countries in acquiring and operating expensive systems. In the case of your example, where are they going to find the money to purchase the Aster 30s if the latter missile is selected? Bear in mind that the RMN chose the Aster-15s first after extensive studies but reverted to the ESSM(range is actually <50km) because of cost reasons. And that is only for a mere <32 Aster missiles(<16 per ship). Let alone an entire battery of Aster 30s.
The Indonesians are grappling with cost issues just as well. Look at thier airforce. Moreover, these are larger countries with the ability to absorb more damage. Look at thier SAM systems. They have never really bothered about them. We are not like them.
The biggest plausible reason to acquiring a long range SAM came from the Defence minister himself. He was referring to intermediate missiles from rogue states like North Korea. That would require a long range SAM system to counteract against.
And as mentioned, newer medium range missiles are much longer ranged than the I-hawks. The I-hawks are slated to be around for less <10 years after the recent upgrades. A replacement is coming. And I suspect the RSAF is waiting for prices to stabilize and technologies to mature further. I must add a qualifier in that the replacement for the medium-ranged I-hawks could possibly be distinct from the upper tier system Defence Minister Teo was talking about. So, we could be talking about 2 different requirements here. Interesting times..

I have posted on S-300/400 on another old thread.
This system was developed for USSR/Russia's air defence. All the batteries are with the PVO units. As they have very long boders, the missiles had to be long range.
Now if we were to plant a similar system into SEA, that air defense system now becomes a strategic offensive weapon. We can deny the air space for Malaysia and Indonesia. So the context has changed.
From a deployment perspective, it becomes a MLRS primary target. So much so that I would deploy it on "acquired territory" at the earliest opportunity. That way any kind attack against the missiles will not be on Singapore territory. -
The MLRS would have to FIND the Flaplid first before it can target it. Considering our AEW capabilities, I don't think our SAMs will light up that easily to be found by their SIGINT/ELINT capabilities.Originally posted by touchstone_2000:I have posted on S-300/400 on another old thread.
