The T-80 is one hell of a tank. So much more capable than anything made out of the T-72 design.

If you ask me, again I think they have got a very good deal.
It's kinda like us getting our AMX13 and Centurions. They are FAR FAR away from being good or modern up-tp-date vehicles even at the time we got them. In fact, by the 70's both types were ancient relics that everybody was trying to get rid of.
But we got them for next-to-nothing, which makes them a good deal. Otherwise, the AMX13 is nothing but a worthless pile of junk. If not for us getting the Leo, the PT91 will walk all over our AMX13 and Centurions. -

No L2, Still got Spike, matador...and that flying thing in the sky with a buddy and 32 missiles between the two
Bsides, when we got those things, in our part of the world they are still relevant and comparable enough to hold their own.
Not to mention the SM1 is a good fire support even for infantry. -
Thank God we didn't go with the Rooivalk! My heart sank when I first saw its name among the contenders!

What makes you think they will try to shoot at a tank 1 km away with arty pounding on them and when your company is going to assault their position?
The arty might not hit the bunkers but SM1 1 km away sure will -
There is no doubt they are again screwed by their politicians making MAF buy a tank they didn't want. But it is better than - say, the Arjun.
Bartering palm oil for MBT you really cannot complain, lah. -

Looks like a T-72 Chassis, with a redesigned turret w/ spaced armor. Even the gun looks like a T-72 barrel. -

Technologically it's superior to the T-90. But in terms of weight it belongs to the category of western tanks. The Army is concerned about the infrastructure on the border like bridges. They think that Arjun cannot be moved over the bridges because most are very old and cannot take the weight of Arjun. Even if the government says that they will provide the Abrams or Leopard tanks, the Army cannot have them because of weight issues. The doctrine of the Indian army is based on Soviet armored tactics based on number. So they can only have T-90 in service. Nothing about survivability. Have twice T-90's than the enemy tanks and in the end half of them will survive.

The problem with the T-72/90 series of tanks is not their combat ability, but rather crew survivability. With the ammunition carousel stored just under the turret, its a recipe for catastrophic turret tossing explosions. No way a human being survives that.
Western designs have sealed of compartments for ammunition, as well as blow out panels to improve crew survivability.
