Repelled Iranians: A Navy boarding party in the Gulf

The incident happened a few months before 15 British sailors and marines were taken prisoner in the same Gulf waters.
Several military sources have told the BBC that Iranian naval forces tried to capture an Australian Navy boarding team but were vigorously repelled.
The BBC claims that the Australian Navy boarding party had just finished searching a vessel in the Gulf, when Iranian boats came out to meet them.
The Australians reportedly saw the Iranian patrol approaching, reboarded the ship they had been searching, and aimed their weapons at the Iranian boats.
The Australians used what was described as "highly colourful language" to deter the Iranian patrol.
It is not known if details of the incident were passed onto the British Navy before 15 of its personnel were captured in March.

I read that.
i think this is probably what leadership decision and experience count. The unexpected will always happen. troops on the ground have to make that decision. Also perharps that allow the Iranian navy to regroup and gain experience to board the Brit.
But the Brit did not thought out carefully, and for the escorting helicopters to not be around is just......nothing to say perharps to relax. -

the brits who got caught were lead by some pimply-faced officers in their 20s ....
kinda reminds me of the pimply faced 18 years old lieutenants in the SAF though ....

I think depends on the situation that influence decision. If kenna surrounded and out-numbered, I don't think any one would wanna be hero, even for those seasoned sea dogs.
Best is use USN's stance. If an unknown vessel fails to comply warning and proceed to enter certain zone around your vessel, proceed with warning shots. If intruding vessel continues approach, turn that zone into killing zone.
Imagine an RSN corvette kenna chased by 3 or more Indonesian navy vessels in disputed waters within 5nm range...How will u respond as the captain well versed in naval engagement protocol? Attempt radio contact, maneuver your ships into defensive position with firing solutions ready, fire warning shots or fire crippling rounds to one of the vessel's engine section? Or attempt to sink all bandits?

The barking dogs don't bite.
Our schools here don't teach profanities, if our 18 years old lieutenants did not learn in the SAF, chances that they would not know, or at least their vocab is limited in this area.
The brits had been in Iraq since desert storm, any pimply-faced young officers should have been battle hardened by now. Obviously their instruction was not clear as to how to handle unforeseen circumstances as such, or they need to be taught how to use profanities? somehow the oz are better trained than them, at least in this area. -
for that matter, if our patrol boat encounter pirates in South China Sea, dressed like indonesia navy, what would we do? I have never been in the navy, but I believe there must be some international protocol, but to abandon our ship and be captured is not an option, unless we are outgunned. Firing is last resort, but should never be ruled out. Better come back and face SAF court marshall than stay in the indonesian jail, waiting for release through diplomatic means, in the name of ASEAN solidarity.Originally posted by beavan:will they even fire?

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) says up to five Iranian gunboats tried to capture Australian sailors in the Persian Gulf in December 2004.
A defence spokesman told reporters the four-hour confrontation occurred after Australian navy personnel boarded a grounded cargo ship in the gulf.
Commodore Steve Gilmore said the incident began when Australian soldiers were leaving the cargo vessel, which was located near the Iraq-Iran maritime border.
He said an Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboat moved close by and its armed personnel made "very overt gestures".
The boarding party commander ordered the Australians to reboard the cargo ship.
"He got his boarding party back on to the ship and established a very credible and appropriate defensive position," Commodore Gilmore told reporters in Canberra.
"(They) began what I think is very unique in the Australian way and that's the capacity to negotiate, to introduce extra weighpoints if you like, in the continuum of force," he said.
Another four Iranian military boats carrying rocket-propelled grenade launchers arrived to reinforce their colleagues in the next 45 minutes, Commodore Gilmore said.
"Over a tense period of four hours the boarding party was eventually successfully extracted by helicopter back to the (HMAS) Adelaide.
The Australians had originally boarded the MV Sham from two inflatable boats launched from the HMAS Adelaide while a Seahawk helicopter carried out surveillance.
No shots were fired during the encounter.
"We were able to keep that as the case by the very deliberate, well-considered and well-executed negotiation process that the Australian boarding officer undertook.
"The determined approach, the no-nonsense approach of the Australian boarding party, was able to effectively manage that situation."
The Australians' handling of the stand-off is being compared to that of British sailors captured by Iranian forces in March this year during a similar operation and accused of straying into Iranian waters.
The Britons were paraded on Iranian television and eventually released amid a diplomatic storm.
Commodore Gilmore said there were similarities and differences between the two incidents.
"It's very difficult to predict the (British) outcome should have been the same as the Australian outcome because it wasn't the same circumstances."
Commodore Gilmore said the intentions of the Iranians had not been clear.
"It was certainly quite overt and they were attempting to establish what the Australians were doing, there's no doubt about that."
A BBC reporter, quoting sources, said the Australian sailors used colourful language to help hold off the Iranians.
Commodore Gilmore said: "As Australians I think we all know our capacity to engage, to defuse by discussion and they indeed did that.
"We might imagine what (language) was there - I haven't delved into that.
"The important thing to note is that it worked."
The commodore, who commanded the joint task maritime task force in the Gulf shortly after the incident, said the Australian sailors had handled themselves superbly.
"Those values that I think were displayed really do highlight what is unique about the Australian soldier - the courage that was shown in demanding circumstance, the loyalty, the teamwork were there throughout."
Two members of the team were awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for their conduct during the incident.
Commodore Gilmore said it was not reported at the time because while unique in some ways it was representative of operations in the Gulf at the time.
"From an operation circumstance I don't believe there was any recognition there was a need to highlight that particular activity."

Thats what you call quick thinking.
To reboard the ship and establish a defensive position. Should a firefight break out, not only the aussie sailors have a better chance of surviving, it would be Iranians that would find themselves in the open against the angry Adelaide.

Perhaps maybe Navies should consider Naval Gunships. Gunships armed with 30mm's, Naval Hellfires and even AShMs.
I'd be scared shitless as the Iranians if i run into a pair of Navalized Apaches escorting the boarding team. -

The idea of getting back onboard the vessel they boarded was certainly a good one. Very sound tactical decision on the boarding party commander. Just curious...is there any way of providing support to the boarding party, such that it is on 3minutes notice? Because it feels awful naked to be out there with nothing more then 5.56mmrifles ,7.62 MG or maybe a M203 launcher.
