Image A - Ranging Process
Using the gradient on the left, u can approximate the range of the target putting him against the gradient. In this example, we can see that the soldier is approximately 300m away, as his head falls between the 4-2 mark?
Image B - dunno what the hell lar.
But by right, u should now place the arrow that corresponds to the 300m mark on the target.
Yeap, its the ever annoying SVD alright! -

aha deflection shot from 300m? so short range need a deflection shot?

Thats the recticle use on the Russian PSO-1 scope for hte SVD! the scope is cam and calibrated for the 7.62x54R ammunition 7n1 ammunition.
YOu can sight it at say 100 meter and set the cam on the scope to 1,... so when you are shooting 200, 300 , 400 ... you merely click the cam to the appropiate range.
YOu always use the 1st cheveron with the cam calibration untill you reach 1000 meter ! than the 2nd cheveron down is 1100 meter, 1200 and 1300 meter.
shooting 1100 and more on a 4 power PSO-1 scope is not realistic! although for what I use, I say the SVD is a good 800 meter rifle !not more than that!
That was what was written on my SVD scope manual! and it really works/

adjust after you pratice.
Thats is if the target far away and moving,u have put the sight ahead
of the target.
